What is torque relaxation and why can it cause complications when measuring torque on a fastener? Torque relaxation occurs in fastened components and joints when the fastener 'embeds' itself in the surface of a part or into softer materials such as gaskets. Depending on the complexity of the material or application, joints can then take time to settle after the tightening is completed. This process can sometimes mean that parts may not be correctly fastened to the intended torque specification and the required clamp-load to secure the assembly properly is not met.
