Yesterday we delivered a CPD event exploring how creativity and the outdoors can enable very young children to explore the world and develop skills for the future. The event took place in the beautiful forest school at Sunny Brow nursery in Middleton. Head Teacher Debra Wright opened the event with a tour of the garden area and an introduction to child led, outdoor learning. Kathryn Taylor from Rochdale Music Service shared some nature themed songs, games and instrument making activities for outdoors, before artist Danielle Lovett introduced a range of outdoor art activities, using natural materials. We were pleased to see lots of new faces at the event including staff from private, voluntary and independent nurseries who have now joined our mailing list to keep up to date with cultural education news and opportunities in Rochdale. Our next CPD event is on Tuesday and is aimed at careers advisors and secondary school teachers. For more information and to book a place visit: https://lnkd.in/erUbzYRA

TEENAGE MARKET RETURNS TO MIDDLETON! Do you know someone aged 13 - 25 who dreams of turning their hobbies into cash? Maybe they are already selling their creations and want to turn it into a business? Or do you know a young adult who loves to perform? The Middleton Teenage Market could be for them. Open to young people from across the Rochdale Borough to take part, free of charge. Each market will include plenty of stalls for selling work, food & drink stalls and a stage for solo or group performances (music, dance, circus skills – you tell us what your special skills are!). Taking place outdoors in the busy Middleton Gardens in the centre of Middleton, on Sunday 1st December 2024, 11am – 3pm. On the lead up to the market there will be plenty of support to all stallholders so they feel prepared, including events with established sellers offering advice on subjects like how to effectively price products and how to display work beautifully to drive sales. To apply, make sure you register via the Teenage Markets website before Monday 18th November 2024. For more information and to register your place, please visit https://lnkd.in/e7V7T-5j If you have any questions about the Teenage Markets then you can email admin@rochdalecreates.co.uk Who can get involved? By young people, we mean anyone aged between 13 – 25 years old. Anyone under the age of 18 will need to be supervised by a carer or guardian. We want to prioritise anyone from the Rochdale borough but if you live in Greater Manchester or the North West of England you can still apply. The opportunity is open to all levels of experience. If you have never done a market before we will support you with how to set up a stall, and all the other logistics around becoming a market trader or performer.

In response to the National Youth Association's 'Art of Youth Work' campaign young people and youth workers across Rochdale have been creating art work which was shared at Number One Riverside yesterday, as part of an event to mark National Youth Work week. Youth workers and artists, who have been involved in the Create Rochdale Skills Share programme, worked together to plan and deliver a carousel of creative workshops for young people from different youth centres. The event demonstrated the skills, creativity and impact of our local professional youth workers who regularly work in partnership with artists and cultural organisations to ensure that young people have the opportunity to experience and explore arts and culture.

'Even though we are little, you should listen to us because we have big ideas.' Around 3000 people have visited the Wild Wanders trail at Hollingworth Lake Country Park and listened to the voices of local children express their hopes and ideas for the future through an immersive installation of nature, light and hope. Thank you to Walk the Plank and all of the partners who have collaborated on this project and given children and visitors in Rochdale an inspiring and memorable experience.

Wild Wanders in Rochdale - families, young people, children and adults walking through a woodland space at night, discovering the animals that live there, hearing the sounds of owls and bats and rooks, and then meeting the Baby - with a sound poem which speaks of children’s hopes for the future. More a nature trail than a Light Trail, around 3000 people have attended over five nights, and we have tried to work with care and consideration of our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment in this (relatively) wild space. Thank you to the artists - especially sonic midwife @CaroC, designer Jess Rost , Eye of the Newt, Lantern Company, @Illuminos, the stilt performers, and the puppeteers; thank you to producer @AliceCarter assisted by Shyla Toulalan, to Production Manager Neal McBride, and all of Walk the Plank’s hard working crew; to the volunteers, and the amazing Guides - recruited from across Rochdale - who brought each installation to life with their expertise around nature, their storytelling and playfulness. Thank you to creative partners Lee Brennan Helen Thackray Vicky Lomax Bea Corrigan Martha Haywood Pete Courtie for guidance and support throughout the creative journey; and to all the schools and teachers who made it possible to meet and record Rochdale’s children when they visited the Baby at the Town Hall in September….here’s to the mighty power of the next generation: the children who contributed their words and pictures “We may be small but we have Mighty in us” #RochdaleCreates #WildWanders #outdoorarts Wild Wanders was created by Walk the Plank and commissioned by Rochdale Borough Council with support from @RochdaleDevelopmentAgency @CreativePartnershipsRochdale @CultureCo-op, Your Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation, Arts Council England Garfield Weston
