The Tragedy of the Middle East: A Letter from Lebanon In a special appearance on The David McWilliams Podcast, Lebanese economist and CEO of Crystol Energy, Dr Carole Nakhle, offers her perspective on the severe economic and political challenges currently facing Lebanon. Drawing from her personal experiences growing up in Beirut, Dr. Nakhle discusses the devastating effects of hyperinflation, corruption, and political instability, which have led to one of the most significant financial collapses in the modern history of #Lebanon. Not so long ago, any instability in the Middle East would send oil prices soaring and the global economy into a tailspin Today, with a war raging in #Gaza and #Lebanon, Houthi missiles sinking ships in the #RedSea, and Iran and Israel trading direct attacks on each other, the #oil markets are barely taking notice. That comes on top of the ongoing war in #Ukraine and heavy sanctions imposed on major oil producers. In this Geopolitical Intelligence Services report, Dr Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy, argues that the above trends do not demote the impact of geopolitics on #energy markets. However, they illustrate an important development: The world has become more resilient to energy supply disruptions and to threats to those supplies. https://lnkd.in/dBZbJbf2 #OOTT #MiddleEast #security #oil

Nuclear trends On a regional scale, trends diverge in #nuclear. While some corners of the globe have embraced nuclear power, others have abandoned it. Until 2016, #Europe was the dominant player in the nuclear energy market, generating 36 percent of global nuclear power. Today, however, Europe ranks third, holding a 27 percent share, following #NorthAmerica at 34 percent and the #Asia-Pacific region at 29 percent. In #Africa, #LatinAmerica and the #MiddleEast, nuclear energy usage is minimal, accounting for an aggregate share of just 2.5 percent. Technological advances in the #oil and #gas industry are reducing both the #carbon footprint and operational costs, as #digital technologies make processes faster, cheaper, and safer. Further progress is expected in addressing #methane emissions through the adoption of advanced monitoring technologies, stricter regulatory frameworks, and industry initiatives aimed at reducing leaks and minimizing the environmental impact of oil and gas operations. The United Kingdom shuts down its last coal plant, marking the end of 142 years of coal-powered electricity - The #UK's reliance on #coal for #electricity has dramatically decreased from 59% in 1985 to just 1% in 2023. - Meanwhile, coal was dethroned as the UK's leading energy source in 1999 when gas took over as the dominant fuel, and by 2017, coal had fallen to the lowest contributor in the country's electricity mix. -In contrast, low-carbon energy sources, including #renewables and #nuclear, have risen sharply, contributing to 64% of the UK's electricity mix, up from 23% in 1985. - Currently, the UK attempts to balance #energy and #climate security by extending the productive use of its North Sea oil and gas fields while pleding ambitious climate targets.

Saudi Arabia to ditch the $100-per-barrel oil price target – #OPEC, and particularly #SaudiArabia, does not set an officially stated #oil price target. Doing so, while managing global oil output, would resemble a cartel behaviour, which the producers’ group deny. – For Saudi Arabia, the reference to the $100 per barrel oil price reflects its fiscal breakeven level – the average price needed to balance the government budget. However, this does not imply that the Kingdom cannot function when oil prices fall below that threshold. Many countries continue to perform even with a budget deficit. – If media reports suggesting that Saudi Arabia may be ditching that price target have credible sources, then the news could be interpreted as a threat by Saudi Arabia to other OPEC+ members, like #Iraq and #Kazakhstan, who have been overproducing. Dr Carole Nakhle discussing Saudi Arabia’s $100-per-barrel oil price target in this interview with Dan Murphy from CNBC: https://lnkd.in/dBDmQN9N
