Threat, risk & security strategist with strong crisis management experience. Talks about security and terrorism issues. Never knowingly going in the same direction as everybody else. Author of Protect Duty white paper
Yesterday, the UK took a further step forward in becoming a safer place when #MartynsLaw completed its committee stage, well ahead of some forecasted schedules (mine mostly 😂 ). This opens up the possibility of its 3rd hearing in the House of Commons before the end of November but almost certainly before Christmas. The government has applied some amendments, mostly administrative, with one important one that gives the Security Industry Authority the ability to share information with other agencies. That will be helpful. There were some amendments proposed by the The Conservative Party opposition, which I think would have been unhelpful, but have not been pursued. The bill looks different to what we had in mind and we remain disappointed that the threshold for coming into scope is 200. BUT, both Figen Murray OBE and I have learned that politics is about playing the long-game, and learning to compromise, so that you can come back and fight another day. On that basis, we are delighted with the progress being made by Keir Starmer's government. Somebody who gave evidence said 'Nobody wants their child's name on a piece of legislation' and I will never forget that statement, as we move towards the conclusion of years of hard work. But, I am grateful that we have been able to corral people around Martyn's memory, for this higher purpose.

Three members of an #OCG which converted blank firing guns and ammunition into legitimate firearms are facing significant spells behind bars, following an investigation by our Regional Organised Crime Unit. Ashley Latimer-Basill, from Thriplow, his brother Michael Latimer from St Albans, and Robert Kenna from Chatteris, have all now been convicted for firearms and drugs offences. They worked together purchasing over a hundred blank firers and converting them for onward sale. The trio were also involved in the production of ‘zombie dust’, a highly dangerous mix of heroin and other substances, including nitazenes, which were being sold to gangs across the country. The investigation shone a light on the dealings across separate criminal networks, with a further five members of an associated OCG also due to be sentenced in the coming months for their roles in selling and moving the guns.
