While there's no shortage of excitement around green hydrogen as a cornerstone for a net-zero future, the path forward is far from straightforward. The recent article from The Economic Times highlights a significant challenge: despite the grand vision and numerous planned projects, the demand for green hydrogen is lagging. Many of the nearly 1,600 hydrogen projects announced worldwide lack committed buyers. Without secured purchase agreements, these projects struggle to gain the financial backing needed to get off the ground. One of the main hurdles is the high cost of green hydrogen, which can be up to four times more expensive than hydrogen produced from natural gas. Additionally, the infrastructure to produce, transport, and store hydrogen is still underdeveloped, making it a risky venture for potential investors. However, there are success stories to note. Companies that are finding ways to align their projects closely with customer needs and integrate the entire ecosystem—from renewable energy sources to nearby industrial consumers—are making progress. For instance, Hy Stor Energy’s project in Mississippi is designed around a committed buyer, which could be a model for future developments. As the hydrogen sector continues to evolve, it's crucial to to be strategic in identifying projects and partners that are well-positioned to succeed.
