Both offer distinct advantages when it comes to decarbonizing rail transport, but it's important to recognize that each solution has its own set of challenges. Battery-powered trains are ideal for shorter routes and provide flexibility in regions where infrastructure for hydrogen refueling is still in development. They offer the benefit of relatively lower upfront costs when paired with partial electrification or charging stations. On the other hand, hydrogen trains come into play for longer, non-electrified lines where operational autonomy is key. They can cover greater distances without needing frequent refueling, making them a strong alternative to diesel in remote areas. However, the establishment of local hydrogen production and distribution infrastructure is crucial, and costs can vary based on the maturity of the hydrogen ecosystem in each region. As the industry advances, the decision between hydrogen and battery solutions will depend on specific operational needs, infrastructure, and long-term sustainability goals. Both are promising alternatives to diesel to help decarbonize public transport.

The hydrogen sector is facing significant headwinds, as highlighted by Ballard Power Systems' recent decision to cut jobs and scale back spending by 30%. CEO Randy MacEwen pointed out that the development of clean hydrogen infrastructure is "years behind schedule," delaying plans like Ballard's 3GW plant in Texas. Yet despite these setbacks, hydrogen remains essential for decarbonizing industries like heavy mobility. As MacEwan said, "While the speed of travel has changed, we have unwavering conviction on the direction of travel." From my perspective (and Ballard's), we should stay hopeful while being realistic about the road ahead. Though timelines may have shifted, the sector’s potential remains enormous. Hydrogen's role in the future of clean energy is clear, but it will take resilience and adaptability to navigate the current slowdown and capitalize on the long-term opportunities.
