Big shout out to our equine colleagues who are hard at work at British Equine Veterinary Association Congress 2024 (11-14 Sept, Liverpool), promoting CVS Equine as a great place to work. The design of this year’s stand celebrates the work of everyone in the CVS Equine division – our receptionist, administration, yard, laboratory, nurse and vet colleagues - in recognition of the vital part that all of our clinical and non-clinical colleagues play in practice. Our stand has information about all of our brilliant equine practices, the amazing research work being done by our colleagues, along with copies of The Gait Post which focuses on all of the great things our practices and colleagues have achieved - both inside and outside of work. So, if you are at BEVA today or tomorrow, come along and meet with our fantastic and supportive teams. We’d love to meet you! #CVSEquine #veterinary #BEVA #GreatPlaceToWork #CareAtOurHeart [Visual description: A selection of shots showing the CVS Equine stand at BEVA Congress 2024]

Schedule 3 day! 🎉 A number of veterinary nurses from our Glasgow Hub - @3 Mile Veterinary Centre @Albavet @Firstvets - participated in our Schedule 3 day, organised and run by our wonderful veterinary surgeons Alice, Hannah and our rotating surgeon Rachel - who certifies in carrying out advanced surgery. Not only did they take time to teach our nurses vital skills to advance their clinical practice and support the veterinary team as a whole, they also supplied detailed learning handouts with valuable information on each area of focus. What is Scheduled 3? “Under this Schedule 3 exemption, the privilege of giving any medical treatment or carrying out minor surgery, not involving entry into a body cavity, is given to Registered Veterinary nurses (RVNs) under the direction of their employer to animals under their employer's care.” In this Schedule 3 training day nurses carried out emergency CPR training, dental X-ray training and various suturing techniques. Everyone who participated in the training day was enthusiastic and keen to put their skills into practice and grateful to everyone who helped organise the event. Well done team! #Schedule3 #BetheNurseYouWantToBe #progression [Visual description: A collage of images showing CVS nurses on the training day]

Ever wondered why so few ultrasounds are conducted in first opinion small animal practice? We conducted a nation-wide clinical improvement project to find out why - and to improve the use of ultrasound in first opinion diagnosis. Our Hub Clinical Lead Team has created a suite of resources, and conducted dedicated vet and nurse training sessions to upskill and develop our clinicians. It’s led to an additional 3,675 scans being conducted in 31 participating practices. It’s also been recently recognised with a @RCVSKnowledge ‘highly commended’ at its 2024 awards. Take a look here to see how our brilliant colleagues did it https://lnkd.in/eAqNxNd4 . #veterinary #qualityimprovement #ultrasound

We’re so proud of our ROSEMULLION VETERINARY PRACTICE LIMITED in Cornwall, which is one of 5 practices nation-wide to be recognised for their antibiotic amnesty efforts by rumacae.org.uk. Rosemullion had one of the highest numbers of returned antibiotics during the 2023 campaign. The #VeterinaryAntibioticAmnesty encourages the public to return out-of-date and unused antibiotics to their practice to help tackle the growing issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The amnesty is led by a collaboration of UK veterinary organisations, practices and charities to educate owners and raise awareness of the importance of safe use and disposal of antibiotics - to address AMR and prevent environmental pollution. The campaign is gaining momentum, with the 2023 amnesty seeing more than 3 times the 2022 total being returned - including highest priority critically important antibiotics. Please sign up to receive more information about the 2024 campaign and download the campaign toolkit here: https://lnkd.in/eqhf73iH. On this #InternationalDayofCharity, RVN Debbie Baird shares her experience of travelling to Tanzania with Worldwide Veterinary Service to support a sterilisation and rabies project. Debbie was part of a team of 5 vets and 2 nurses, working alongside local technicians and kennels staff. Due to the volume of neutering procedures, drapes and instruments were washed, dried, resterilised and kept ready for use throughout the day. With no gas anaesthetic, the team used a premedication of xylazine topped up with ketamine or diazepam, and sometimes propofol for young puppies. Due to the presence of blood borne parasites, increased bleeding is common, and the patients required intense monitoring. Despite these challenges, patients recovered swiftly and were discharged before the end of the day, with owners waiting hours to take them home. It is uncommon for dogs to have collars or live inside the home or be petted, yet the bond with their owners was clear. Cats were also brought in for rabies vaccines or neutering, held in the arms of a child and not distressed at all by the presence of 20 or 30 dogs. These animals lived in amazing harmony and recovered alongside each other. Debbie used a CVS Giving Back Day for part of the volunteering trip. The CVS Giving Back Day initiative encourages colleagues to take a paid day off work each year, to focus on a sustainability project of their choice or to volunteer for charity. Through facilitating all of our colleagues to engage in a Giving Back Day, we can collectively contribute over 8,000 days (equivalent to over 21 years, or over 64,000 hours) of time every year, to community, social and environmental causes. #CVSGroup #CareAtOurHeart #Volunteering Mission Rabies Visual description: Images show an outreach clinic outside a municipal building, and a supervised procedure.

More plastics can now be recycled within CVS to help reduce the amount we send to landfill sites! 🌍 Working with Veolia UK we’ve expanded the list of rigid plastics that we can place into our dry mix recycling bins. Previously we’ve just been limited to hard plastic bottles. In veterinary care a lot of the products we buy are in plastic packaging and there are different types of plastics which are more or less difficult to recycle. The more of these we can recycle the lower the environmental impact. The list of rigid plastics now acceptable in our Veolia Dry Mixed Recycling includes LDPE, HDPE, PET and PP types. So look out for the plastic recycling symbols - and place 1, 2, 4 and 5 in our dry mixed recycling bins! #ZeroWasteWeek #veterinary #waste #recycling #plastic [Visual description: Two images. The first is of a woman holding a recycling box containing plastic bottles. The second is a collage of plastic recycling symbols, highlighting which can now be recycled and which can’t]

Practices in our South 4 region have reduced use of the critically important antibiotic Cefovecin by 310% 👏   Cefovecin is often used to treat cat bite abscesses (CBAs). After liaising with a dermatology specialist, a new clinical guideline was developed for treating a discrete abscess where there is no pyrexia (raised temperature) or cellulitis. Practices treated CBAs with NSAIDS, lancing and flushing (if necessary), and cleaning. Owners were advised to flush the area once daily and received an antibiotic awareness leaflet explaining the reasoning for not prescribing antibiotics.   Cats returned for a nurse re-examination after 5-7 days. The treatment was deemed successful if the wound was infection-free and healing. If the wound was not healing or there was infection or pyrexia, treatment was deemed failed and further treatment was provided. Of the 22 cats audited, 19 (86%) did not need antibiotics to successfully treat the abscess.   Over the eight-month audit period, practices aimed to change their prescribing culture, adopt a case-by-case approach, and support vets in only using antibiotics where necessary. Overall, Cefovecin use reduced from 155 injections to 50 injections a month over a year (a 310% decrease).   There has also been a positive impact on vet-client relationship and trust in practice. Clients have been positive when minimal intervention has been required, particularly as it eliminates the cost of antibiotics.   Antimicrobial resistance continues to threaten the efficacy and treatment of an ever-increasing range of infections. We hope that our CBA clinical audit results will set a benchmark and shape clinical guidelines for the wider veterinary profession in this area.   #CVSGroup #CareAtOurHeart #AntimicrobialStewardship
