Last week, the Pi Labs Demo Day 2024 marked the culmination of our 12-week Growth Programme—a big thank you to all the founders, mentors, and real estate leaders who joined us from all corners of the globe. 🌎 I want to take a moment to reflect on the purpose of this program. We've been running it for 10 years now, but let’s just pause to think about WHY we do what we do. This program was designed to support next-generation startups building the technologies of tomorrow. At Pi Labs, we believe the built world’s challenges require cutting-edge solutions, and today’s tech is not fit for purpose. For example, today’s tech alone is not sufficient to get us to the net zero targets at the speed with which we need to get there. Over the years, we've supported startups like London-based LandTech[Jonny & Andrew], which grew from a small venture in 2015 to a major platform for real estate developers today. A few years after that, we backed Okibo[Nadav & Guy] from Tel Aviv, which has developed robots to address labour shortages in construction. A few years after that, we backed laiout[Cristiano, Wouter & Isak], a startup from Oslo that uses AI to help real estate owners with retrofits and space planning. Each year, the focus shifts as we try to stay ahead of the curve on the frontier of tech for the built world. This year, we were very curious about how AI can help solve the many sustainability challenges that the real estate industry faces off the back of a research paper that we published earlier this year. Sandworm-Linked Group Likely Knocked Down Ukrainian Internet Providers 🛡 Recent attacks on four small Ukrainian internet providers have led to significant disruptions lasting over a week, with suspicions falling on Russian state-backed hackers, specifically the group Solntsepek. ⚔ These actors, renowned for their involvement in the 2023 cyberattack on Ukraine's biggest telecommunication provider Kyivstar, are suspected of expanding beyond basic DDoS methods. The complex, prolonged network disruptions suggest that advanced tools such as the new AcidPour malware might be in play. ◾ This advanced malware is associated with Sandworm, a hacking operation run by Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU. AcidPour is a potent Linux wiper with extended capabilities and is indicative of the hackers' improved technical capabilities and their intention to inflict significant operational impact. Google’s New AI Search Results Promotes Sites Pushing Malware, Scams 🛡 Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) algorithms, in an attempt to enhance user experience, has inadvertently begun recommending scam sites. These misleading sites trick users into downloading unwanted Chrome extensions and participating in fake iPhone giveaways, apart from subscription spam and tech support scams. ⚔ The ingenuity lies in their conversational tone and the push for users to visit these sites for additional information. As the spam-recommended sites look legitimate with similar templates and TLD usage, it seems to be a part of a co-ordinated SEO poisoning attack. 🚨 Always exercise caution when accessing links even when they are recommended by trusted sources like Google. Scammers Steal Millions from FTX, BlockFi Claimants 🛡 Customers of the no longer operational crypto platform BlockFi have been the victim of a highly convincing phishing campaign, leading to borrowers losing their remaining funds within their cryptowallets. ⚔ The attackers have gone above and beyond to impersonate BlockFi, making their fraudulent emails look legitimate with no noticeable errors and quality brand impersonation. Supply Chain Attack Discovered Using Fake Python Infrastructure 🛡 A calculated, multi-faceted attack campaign exploiting a fake Python infrastructure has recently come to light in the #opensource ecosystem, affecting over 170,000 users on GitHub. ⚔ The attackers took a multi-pronged approach, including the creation of multiple malicious open-source tools, account takeover through stolen browser cookies, pushing malicious commits, and even setting up a custom Python mirror to host infected packages. UN Probing 58 Alleged Crypto Heists by North Korea Worth $3 Billion 🛡 North Korean hackers are in the global spotlight once again.
