Chief of Staff and Head of Strategic Projects, Darlington Economic Campus

🏗 👨🏫 Economics at DEC: EconFest Taster Day 👩💻 💷 Why does it matter that the 'E' in DEC stands for 'Economic'? Well... I'll give you three reasons. Firstly, we're always on the lookout for new and innovative ways we can improve economic literacy across all our staff. Economics has tools to help explain our world and improve the way we make decisions and we shouldn't be limiting these just to our economists. Secondly, we want to improve how we make and discuss economic policy. We have 9 departments all interested in the economy and access to world leading experts in the northeast. We aim to regularly bring those two elements together to improve our policymaking. Thirdly, we are developing as a hub for careers in analysis/economics. Though most of our staff aren't analysts, we want to support those who are and make sure DEC is a great place to have not just a job but a career as an analyst of any description. We spent some time during the pre-election period doing all three of these things at our 'EconFest Taster Day'. We had bitesize sessions, deep dives on key policy areas and a networking session for our analysts. As you can see we had a jam packed day with a whole host of speakers and topics: ✖ The Magic of Multipliers Promit explained the circular flow of income, multiplier effect and why 2 x 2 doesn't always equal 4 🔎 The State of the Economy Christina, Promit and Gareth ran through key economic indicators and the view from ONS, HMT and the Bank of England respectively 💰 Monopoly: The Darlo Edition Amanda and Thea used the board game to explain what monopolies are and the role of the CMA 📈 The Economics of Growth Dan, Matthew, Adam and Oliver expounded the economics underlying the growth agenda and the role that DBT, HMT, MHCLG and the CMA all play in making it happen 🤝 To Trade or Not to Trade? Evelyn talked us through the theory of international trade, tariffs and where our cars are actually produced 👋 Analytical Careers and Networking Ed, Heather, Alex and Chloe shared about their careers in and out of analysis in a panel and then directly with our analysts, sharing advice and tips they had picked up along the way Overall it demonstrated exactly why we are care about the 'E' in Darlington Economic Campus. And that was only a taster day... ...watch this space for the real deal in September!

Students at Teesside University have gained first-hand experience into how major policy decisions are developed and implemented as part of a partnership with the Darlington Economic Campus (DEC). Twelve students took part in a six-week Policy Challenge which saw them split into teams to develop policy ideas which were then pitched to a panel of civil servants. One of the judges, Scott Richards, a Senior Strategy and Policy Advisor at the Department of Business and Trade, said: "You could really see the passion in people’s proposals that they put forward. There was some really great evidence and research that underpinned them as well." More on the Darlington Economic Campus Policy Challenge 👉 https://bit.ly/3M0VyhO

Deputy Director - Strategy, Engagement & Performance for the GFF

Yesterday was my last day in HM Treasury and the wonderful Darlington Economic Campus (DEC) before I take some leave and start a new role in early September (more on that soon). I still pinch myself that someone like me, from a lower socially economic background and north east based, has had the privilege of working in central government. If I can do it anyone can!! I have loved my every minute working in Government Finance Function, HM Treasury and DEC, the culture is like nothing else I have experienced in my career. The camaraderie and sense of belonging across HM Treasury and the other government departments there is contagious. I have no doubt that DEC will continue to grow and be an absolute success. During my nearly two years I was able to do so much, on top of my day job in GFF, some highlights like baking cakes for a PM, being a sponsor for the first social mobility week and for the hugely rewarding work experience programme for 16-18 year old's in in HM Treasury. Of course I couldn't post something without saying something about my amazing GFF team. We have achieved so much and reached out to our finance community in a way we haven't been able to before. You guys totally rock and I will miss you all so much. I am staying in the north east so wont be too far away..... keep in touch!
