💡 dbt Labs: Governance in an era of democratisation and self-service Earlier this year, dbt Labs hosted a roundtable at the 2024 DataIQ 100 Discussion, focusing on #data governance, self-service, and #AI in data organisations. In three 30-minute discussions, DataIQ members shared their experiences with data narratives, AI opportunities, and keeping decision-makers focused. 🔊 As data offices increasingly promote data narratives and the use of AI tools, the challenge remains: how can governance be ensured in this era of democratisation and self-service? ➡ AI tools and governance A roundtable participant noted that Chief Data Officers now have more influence in the boardroom, requiring them to educate leaders on AI and promote data-driven strategies across all business areas. A key part of this role is emphasising the importance of data governance as a core element of data literacy. ➡ Governance acceptance and championing Without top-tier buy-in, governance will always struggle. Enthusiasm and understanding from those who own data products are essential to maintaining quality, compliance, and accessibility. When governance is undermined, issues quickly multiply. For example, one participant highlighted challenges with ownership in a data mesh setup. Governance should be tailored to each data product, rather than applying a uniform approach. By customising governance levels, teams can effectively manage critical areas without stifling innovation, though this approach demands more effort. ➡ GenAI’s impact on governance frameworks The rise of generative AI (genAI) has prompted necessary updates to governance frameworks. It's crucial to ensure that governance practices are clear and user-friendly, especially for non-data teams leveraging these tools. Some organisations are establishing dedicated governance structures for #genAI to maintain transparency, despite the additional effort required. 🔎 Find out more about the discussions held at dbt Labs' roundtable, here: https://lnkd.in/ehP_SE_e

💡 AI is powerful medicine. But is it the right cure for you? AI can often be presented as a one-stop solution to business woes and DataIQ’s David Reed explores key points to improve the levels of success in his latest article. 🔎 Does this scenario sound familiar? Your organisation might be facing challenges such as #talent acquisition and retention issues, low productivity, inconsistent service quality, high customer churn, and concerns about fairness for disadvantaged groups. Despite these problems, there's a strong focus from #leadership on adopting #AI and #genAI as a solution, with the belief that integrating these technologies will resolve all issues. The gap between vision and reality in adopting genAI mirrors issues seen in sectors like health, finance, and retail. The rush to leverage genAI for competitive advantage often overlooks the need to align it with existing systems and processes, including workforce considerations. This pattern is familiar from past tech transformations, such as those involving digital #technology, cloud computing, and big #data. The anticipated benefits frequently fall short, often due to an overly urgent, tech-first approach rather than a more measured, strategic one. For this reason, DataIQ argues that adopting a six-step sequence can increase the critical success factors and reduce the friction and risk of failure: ➡ Strategy ➡ Technology ➡ Quality foundations ➡ Governance ➡ Leadership ➡ Literacy 📑 Read the full article to see if AI is the medicine your organisation needs: https://lnkd.in/e4CUG6iP

📢 Anti-DEI Rhetoric and the Closure of The Tech Talent Charter Are Undermining the Future of Data Teams DEI initiatives often remain stuck in discussion, with constant talks on implementation and sustainability across the community. In 2023, DataIQ launched a #DEI working group to share successful practices, but 2024 has been tough for DEI efforts. The closure of The Tech Talent Charter, a UK body promoting diversity in tech, has been a significant setback. Anti-DEI rhetoric is on the rise, with Rockborne CEO Waseem Ali noting that diversity is increasingly dismissed. 🔊 What the research says  “This comes at a time when diverse talent is falling out of the industry,” said Ali. “Our research of over 6,500 data professionals and found that the number of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic professionals in entry level data positions plummeted by more than half from 42% in 2022 to 12% in 2023. And entry-level female data professionals also more than halved from 35% to 11%.” 💡 On course for AI catastrophe  AI #innovation is at risk due to a lack of diversity, particularly in leadership. Ali warns that without balanced teams in data and tech, the technology developed may reflect this imbalance, leading to potentially disastrous outcomes. The industry shows clear signs of this issue, with only 3% of CTOs in Forbes’ 2024 Top #AI Companies being female. This lack of diverse perspectives could severely hinder innovation and profitability. 🔎 What to do?   To tackle the talent crisis, companies need to broaden their hiring beyond top universities and consider diverse backgrounds. Though it requires effort, this approach enriches company culture and diversity of thought. Outdated, lengthy recruitment processes can deter candidates, especially those with imposter syndrome or neurodiverse needs. Transparency and clear communication during hiring are key to improving DEI. 📑 Explore how the rise of anti-DEI rhetoric is jeopardising the future of data teams, here: https://lnkd.in/eiuER3Dz
