Yesterday I attended the Scottish Ethnic Minority Talent Summit 2024, a day which both inspired and challenged me in equal measure. The speakers line-up was top notch and it was particularly wonderful to see so many strong women taking the stage to share their experiences and achievements. I went home with pages and page of notes to reflect on, some great new voices to follow on LinkedIn, new connections to follow up and opportunities to re-connect with lovely people who I’d not seen for along time. As I work for a data team, I wanted to give a particular shout out to Omolabake Fakunle, PhD, FHEA for talking about how data is a way of getting to the hearts and minds of leaders. So true! Data provides us with the potential for accountability – if we can measure, we have the opportunity for change. Eunice IretiOluwa Olukitibi (aka my conference life coach) reminded us to be ready for opportunities, to keep upskilling because who knows what your job might need tomorrow and not just think about the 9-5, it’s what you do in the 5-9 that makes a real difference. Eunice - you shared how hard you worked but you still came back to the importance of giving back. That was beautiful. Everyone in the audience was smiling as we were treated to 2 young members of the DataKirk Data Literacy Club sharing their skills in Excel and Python. Both data and confident communications skills? Wow - that was a joy to see - these young people are ones to watch. Finally I want to mention my former PHS colleague, Dr Richmond Davies FBCS who shared his immigration story. Richmond brought to life that sense of vulnerability of coming to Scotland 31 years ago. It was quietly powerful - proud to know you Richmond. My former PHS colleague Manira Ahmad excelled in her role as Chair of the event, bathing the day with her beautiful warmth. And finally a huge thank you Fash Fasoro and Chuks Ododo and the whole of the DataKirk community for this great event and movement. If you are reading this and you've never been before, I’d strongly recommend booking a ticket for the 2025 event.
