Interesting DatacenterDynamics interview on how public perceptions of data centres are shaped and why the industry needs to do a better job of telling its story. One standout insight is that data centres barely register with the 16-24 year old demographic. Despite living in a world of infinite apps, seamless cloud storage, and always-on connectivity, they’re blissfully ignorant about the vast infrastructure keeping it all running. Full convo here 👇

Over the past year, DataVita has seen strong growth, with sales increasing by 46% from last year, and EBITDA growing by 87%. These figures highlight the growing demand for the digital infrastructure and cloud services we’ve built, but they only tell part of the story. The UK Government’s announcement yesterday about its ambition to lead the global AI revolution has sparked important conversations. Scotland has a huge role to play in this, and we are making sure DataVita and Scotland are at the table. We can’t just watch the AI revolution unfold – we need to shape it. Our focus is on becoming one of the leading providers of AI-ready data centres in the UK. We’re building infrastructure that can handle the demands of cutting-edge AI workloads, with capacities of up to 400 kW per rack. We’re set to double our data centre capacity to 40 MW in the short term, with an ambitious goal of reaching 500 MW in central Scotland over the next five years. Sustainability is at the core of this, integrating renewable energy into everything we do. We’ve also launched National Cloud UK, cloud solutions designed to meet the specific needs of organisations that require secure, transparent, and flexible options. This is particularly important as the AI landscape evolves and businesses demand more control over critical workloads . AI is an incredible opportunity for Scotland. We are committed to making sure Scotland has a significant voice in shaping that future.

Got the chance to hear about the government’s AI action plan first hand today – a positive step forward. What stood out most was the chat before and after the annoucement. It brought together such a diverse mix of people and organisations – from some of the world’s largest tech companies to health and technology researchers, and educators. It’s clear that AI is already making an impact across every part of the economy. The next 12 months will bring plenty of opportunities and challenges. The UK and Scotland have so much to offer in the AI space, so this action plan feels like a key moment to ensure we stay competitive in the global AI market.

Thought I might as well jump on the "AI Prediction for 2025" bandwagon.... so in no particular order... 🎯  The demand for data centres will keep growing rapidly, no shocker here! however, a major hyperscaler will commit to a significant data centre investment in Scotland, marking a turning point in the region 👀 . 🎯 You will be sick of hearing about "AI Agents". Agentic AI will be everywhere, driving disruption and enabling AI to scale across organisations in ways we’ve never seen before. It will also bring significant changes to certain job markets towards the end of 2025. 🎯 Next-Gen Edge Hardware with open-source code/models will lead to some remarkable use cases. One example, is the GB10 Grace-Blackwell superchip, 1,000 times more powerful than a standard laptop but is the size of a small desktop that will enable running large language models (LLMs) locally. 🎯 Some big names in SaaS and hardware will face serious challenges. As disruption intensifies, some may struggle to stay relevant in an AI-driven world. 🎯 The AGI Milestone Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will be declared achieved. While Turing Test benchmarks have already been surpassed, a major player, likely OpenAI, will claim to be the first. This will open the door to Superintelligence (SI). 🎯 AI models will soon have nearly unlimited memory, letting them store and recall information indefinitely. This capability will transform how they learn and interact. 🎯 Apple will continue to struggle with AI innovation. They’ll rely on marketing to present features that other providers have offered for years as something new, but their gaps will become more obvious. 🎯 Some of the new GPU service providers won’t make it. The shift from crypto mining to providing GPU services will be too challenging for certain companies. 🎯 2025: A Year of Big Changes This year is set to be the most disruptive in our lifetimes. With AI advancements, breakthrough hardware, and shifting market dynamics, industries will be transformed like never before.
