How to level up strategic planning policy! In May 2022 the Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill included an option for local authorities to jointly prepare Spatial Development Strategies, now the Bill has become an Act, the #Government need to make amendments to the #NPPF to build an appropriate framework and national policy to steer and incentivise SDSs. We’ve looked at sections from the December 2023 NPPF that relate to plan-making, and given our view of what needs to be considered and amended in the wider review of the NPPF to come. In its review of the #NPPF, the Government is setting #planning on course to do the job it was always intended to do; make informed and intelligent decisions about how our country’s finite and precious land should be planned for the benefit of the many. The new NPPF signals a genuine commitment to planning that has evolved, at least in part, by talking to those at the coal face during the run up to the general election, but the initial flurry of excitement and interpretation surrounding the review has given way to in-depth analysis of its practical application. Today, Sport England have published a report on a series of workshops that we worked on with them and #OHID! All eight workshops were a fantastic experience for our team. We travelled around the country for the 8 sessions, sharing our knowledge and insights on healthy place making and Active Design, and hearing about inspiring work from local experts around what is happening in this complex field. We also got the opportunity to hear from other sectors, with health and physical activity professionals participating in the workshops, helping us understand the challenges they face, and how our planning and design roles could help. Our team recently re-imagined #London for NLA’s competition, using Abercrombie's visionary Great London Map as the initial inspiration. 'Co+London' illustrates a future where #wildlife and Londoners thrive within a #sustainable, interconnected ecosystem. The idea is centred around the six pillars of #placemaking: ⭐ Focus on health: urban areas have integrated natural environments and multi-use spaces, promoting active lifestyles through movement networks, and inclusive communities that are united by environmental sustainability and harmonious coexistence with wildlife. ⭐ Plan for future generations: self-sustaining island villages that use sustainable energy, promote economic upliftment and environmental stewardship, aiming for a 'planet neutral' London where the environment is reclaimed, respected and recovered, and future generations have a healthy and happy capital to live and work in. ⭐ Think beyond boundaries: affordable multi-generational homes allow people to connect and make well-being, accessibility and safety central. Housing estates embrace rewilding creating healthy and green environments, and carbon heavy buildings are retrofitted and updated to adapt to evolving living and working needs. ⭐ Value diversity: multi-use marketplaces for learning, socialising, co-locate working with recreational areas, offer opportunities for everyone thrive, integrate and provide meaningful and valued contributions. ⭐ Leverage innovation: cutting-edge technologies for sustainable, interconnected living, enhance quality of life and allow ecological balance. A network of self-sustaining island villages nurture community, host evolving High Streets and champion circular economies, promoting reuse over consumerism. ⭐ Work in partnership: communities and nature are linked through green paths and revitalised waterways promoting walking, cycling, and boating. We were delighted to receive unanimous support yesterday at Fareham Borough Council’s #Planning Committee for the Village Centre at #Welborne, for our client Buckland Development Limited. The #village centre is fundamental to the Welborne vision, allowing the heart of the new #community to be established as early as possible, contributing hugely to the creation of Welborne as a place rather than just a collection of #homes.
