We had the pleasure of welcoming Public Historian Hannah Parker alongside the Olympia London team to our stone carver Simon Smith's studio to get an inside look at the lost frieze and statues of Olympia's Grand Hall Entrance in progress. "If you’re going to build a national agricultural hall named “Olympia”, who better to watch over it than Demeter - the Olympian goddess of the harvest? 🌾 This Mother’s Day, I visited @dbrlimited - the people restoring the statues of Demeter, Persephone & Triptolemus that watch over @olympialondon ‘s Grand Hall - to have a sneak peek at the goddesses themselves & tell the story of a mother’s quest and a daughter’s sacrifice. 💐" https://lnkd.in/ee8F9YSZ #dbr #pasthasafuture Olympia Events #olympialondon #stonecarving

Since our foundation just over thirty years ago, DBR has been at the forefront of the UK’s built heritage conservation. Over the decades, we’ve seen our team of highly skilled craftspeople preserve and develop the traditional skills that keep our historic buildings and landmarks standing strong for future generations. However, our industry is now facing one of its greatest challenges: a severe skills shortage. Learning a trade is more than just a job—it’s a life skill that is both rewarding and fulfilling. Quality and excellence are in abundance within construction; we just need to champion what we achieve as a team and shake off the outdated stigma surrounding the industry. When asked about the skills shortage in this article by The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Adrian Attwood, Executive Director, responded: “We need a fundamental shift in how construction is perceived, as a sector of national importance, not an afterthought. Careers in construction need an image makeover including highlighting the routes to specialist sectors such as heritage restoration and sustainable construction and retrofitting. “Young people need to see the value, creativity, and purpose in these careers. But it’s also incumbent on us as an industry to change perceptions, championing apprenticeships, mentorships, and success stories. The rewards are huge – financially, professionally, and culturally. If we want the next generation to take up the tools, we must show them why it’s worth it.” Let’s get building! DBR has proudly served as Principal Contractor at St. Peter’s Church in Brighton for nearly a decade, and we are now approaching the completion of the latest phase of works! Our skilled masons have undertaken an extensive programme of repairs and conservation work to the church’s external masonry, ensuring that this iconic landmark is preserved for future generations. The restoration of St. Peter’s is not just about safeguarding its historic fabric—it is about revitalising a much-loved community space. Thanks to the dedication of Holy Trinity Brompton, the church continues to thrive, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of local life in Brighton. We are honoured to have played a part in securing the future of this remarkable building. #dbr #pasthasafuture #brightonhistory #HeritageConservation #StPetersBrighton #MasonryConservation #HistoricBuildings #ChurchRestoration

Celebrating Ecclesiastical Category sponsored by Valley Builders Ltd In 2024, The Restoration of St Leonard's Church, Hove won an Award in this important category. A Grade II listed Anglican church, originally built in the 13th Century and rebuilt in 1878 by renowned architect, Richard Herbert Carpenter, had a complete refresh of internal and external fabric, including roof repairs, internal re-plastering and the construction of the glulam timber framed porch, along with oak screens and expansive double leaf doors. The judges noted: 'This is an impressive project with significant changes to the church yet respecting the retained architecture. The building has been successfully transformed for more contemporary use as well as maintaining a space for traditional services.' ➡️🛠️Submitted by/Contractor: DBR Limited 🏠Architect: John Puttick Associates 👷Site Managers: Jeremy Attwood and Cary Wadey, DBR Limited Could your project be a winner? DBR was proud to sponsor and attend the SPAB Women in Conservation: A Conversation event last night! Timed in recognition of International Women’s Day, this special evening celebrated the talent, resilience, and creativity of women in conservation. A brilliant panel discussion, led by the award-winning sculptor Nina Bilbey, explored the ambitions, skills, and challenges faced by women in careers as carvers, sculptors, masons, and conservators. We were privileged to hear from an inspiring panel: ✨ Marcia Bennett-Male – Sculptor ✨ Josephine Crossland – Stone Carver ✨ Marlène Lagnado – Stonemason & Letter-cutter ✨ Samantha Peacock – Stonemason & Stained Glass Conservator Their insights sparked important conversations about representation, skill-sharing, and breaking barriers in the heritage sector. A huge thank you to the speakers and SPAB for hosting such a meaningful discussion. Let’s continue to champion and support women in conservation and the heritage industry! 💪🛠️✨ #dbr #pasthasafuture #spab #WomenInConservation #HeritageSkills #InternationalWomensDay #DBRConservation
