Several central banks have said they moved to polymer because it is cleaner, greener, more durable and more secure than paper banknotes. De La Rue is the only provider of polymer substrate who also manufactures finished banknotes, combining substrate and print design for exceptional product integration. SAFEGUARD® was launched in response to central bank demand and first issued in 2013. It became De La Rue’s fastest growing product and is already issued on over 100 notes. According to the Currency Benchmarks 2024, the proportion of banknotes printed on a polymer substrate averages slightly over 20%. Specifically, polymer substrates account for 23.3% of the materials used in banknote printing across 30 jurisdictions. This transition to polymer remains a key goal for many central banks, highlighting the growing importance of durable and secure substrates. Happy Halloween! As the spooky night of All Hallows' Eve unfolds, we are dying to shine a light on the Ulster Bank £20 note, printed on SAFEGUARD® by De La Rue and issued in Northern Ireland. This unique note weaves Derry/Londonderry’s Halloween festivities into its security features. Under the eerie glow of UV light, skeletons and Leisler’s bats come to life, mingling with street performers and their audience, capturing the vibrant music and culture of Northern Ireland. Halloween, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Saints or All Hallows, kicks off the Allhallowtide season. Its roots reach back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated on the 1st November, in today’s calendar. It was believed that on this day, the spirits of the dead returned home, prompting people to don costumes and light bonfires to ward off these spirits. The Central Bank of Samoa is issuing limited-edition commemorative banknotes, designed and printed by De La Rue, honouring Samoa's historic hosting of the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), being held in Apia, Samoa from October 21 to 26, 2024. The De La Rue team were proud to take part in the event hosted by the Central Bank of Samoa, revealing the new commemoratives of the award winning 60-tālā on cotton substrate and the 5-tālā, 10-tālā and 20-tālā banknotes printed on SAFEGUARD® polymer substrate. The 60-tālā commemorates the 60th anniversary of Samoa's independence. The front design features a portrait of the Honourable Fiame Naomi Mataafa, Samoa's first female Prime Minister. On the back of the banknote, the vignette showcases the Honourable Fiame Mataafa Faumuina Mulinuu II, Samoa's first Prime Minister during its independence in 1962, making this banknote the unique global example, portraying a father and daughter who both held the position of Prime Minister. This exceptional banknote, winner of the "Best Commemorative Banknote of the Year", also incorporates IGNITE® De la Rue’s ultimate colour changing thread. In the image below, Governor Maiava Atalina Emma Ainuu-Enari is demonstrating her commitment to sustainability by wearing sunglasses made of recycled polymer banknote waste.
