    I’ve managed 1000’s of campaigns across dozens of brands. Big brands, small brands. Household names and start-ups. The campaigns that failed made two mistakes: They lacked bravery or they lacked rigour. Here’s 4 tactics to win more often: ✅Cut through. Out of the 1000’s of ads seen every day yours needs to cut through. If it doesn’t cut through it can’t have any impact. If it doesn’t have any impact it won’t deliver results. ✅Don’t’ be dull… ✅Be open to other views but don’t listen to anecdotes and opinion. ✅Strategise with passion, but don’t let strategy be your master. Media planning and buying isn’t the sexiest part of advertising, but it is one of the most important. Professor Robert Cialdini wrote 6 Principles of Influence (see post on 30th September), how does this apply to your campaign? Here’s a few starters… Social proof: Partner with trusted brands e.g. partnerships, sponsorships, co-promotions Scarcity: Limited edition. ‘buy now’, ‘ends this week’, ‘last few remaining’…you get the gist. Reciprocation Free trial. Collect points (Nectar, Club Card). Free gift. Commitment and consistency Use a product or sales ladder: ‘Prices from’ Liking Comedy, music, sport as a way of connecting.     Here’s one for the CFO… Or rather one for you when the CFO asks you to justify marketing spend. One of the intrinsic benefits of having a recognisable brand is that consumers are more likely and willing to pay more for your brand versus a less well known competitor. In this great piece by the bright sparks over at Magic Numbers, they demonstrate the benefit of strong brand messaging on the Tonic Water market. In short, strong brand messaging means you can charge more than your competitors. For marketers and planners facing into a recessionary period the temptation will be to look for quick wins to boost sales, with price promotions being an easy target. But with the pressure on business margins due to supply chain cost increases, the answer may be to keep your prices higher than competitors.
