The Chancellor's Autumn Budget is a start with some welcome announcements, however people affected by dementia need more. Here’s why... 👇 Today, the Chancellor announced: 👉 Increased NHS funding to help deliver more appointments and reduce referral times 👉 £600bn for councils to help provide the social care people need locally 👉 A rise in the carers allowance earnings threshold We welcome this news. However, GP surgeries are overstretched and 1 in 4 people in hospital beds have dementia. We need real investment and reform across the system so that people can access the vital specialist dementia support they need. #AutumnBudget #AutumnStatement #DementiaCare

Today, nearly one million people in the UK are living with dementia. 📣 So, it comes as no surprise that dementia is the leading cause of death in England and Wales for the second year in a row. As the recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) findings show, dementia care is a healthcare crisis that we can no longer ignore. Currently, there are too many barriers to people receiving the support and care they need. However, we know that with the right political will, it can be fixed. We are committed to ensuring that life-changing support is available to anyone affected by dementia. 💙 Find out more by reading our blog: https://lnkd.in/eik67zCS If you need advice or support from a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, call our free Helpline on 0800 888 6678 or email helpline@dementiauk.org. ☎️ #Dementia #DementiaCareCantWait #DementiaSupport

Chris cared for both of his parents when they were diagnosed with dementia. He told us "The support was hopelessly lacking. So many times I’ve felt like I’ve been left to fend for myself." 💙 The Government must urgently reform social care so that millions of people like Chris can get the care they need. That’s why we've joined with over 60 charities as part of the Care and Support Alliance to write to the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, ahead of the Autumn Budget on 30th October telling her: please don’t ignore social care. Together we want to make social care work for everyone across England by urging the Government to: 👉 Increase funding for social care now and in the future. 👉 Support councils to reduce waiting times for care assessments. 👉 Develop a new National Carers Strategy for unpaid carers that urgently reviews the benefits, leave and breaks that carers are entitled to. 👉 Improve pay, conditions and development for social care staff to address significant workforce vacancies. Tomorrow the clocks go back. But what does this mean for people with dementia?⏰ As evenings become darker earlier, some people with dementia may experience a growing sense of confusion or agitation at dusk. They may appear anxious, pace, shout, and try to leave the home. This is known as sundowning. 🌇 Sundowning might occur if the person is tired, hungry, thirsty or in pain at the end of the day, or because the setting sun makes them feel they should be somewhere else. Here are some tips for managing and preventing sundowning: 🗨️ Stay calm, talk in a slow, soothing way, and sit close to the person to reassure them. 💡 Close the curtains and turn lights on before dusk to ease the transition to night-time. ☕ Distractions – like making a hot drink, watching TV or listening to music – may help reduce confusion.
