Thanks to John Briggs for 50 years of NHS volunteering! John, a member of Ripley Hospital’s League of Friends, was honoured for 50 years of volunteering service at the league’s 2024 annual general meeting this month. It marked a remarkable half-century since John first accepted the voluntary unpaid role as league treasurer, and in all that time he has served with an unshaken commitment, even organising his holidays around committee meetings. John retired from his professional role in accountancy for the Cooperative in 2007 but has no plans to step back from his volunteering role and remains strongly attached to Ripley Hospital and the League of Friends, as just “part of what I do”. In the past 24 years alone the league has funded improvement projects at Ripley Hospital totalling well over £2 million…. £2,165,570 to be precise, as a treasurer must be! You can read more about John's remarkable volunteering commitment here: https://ow.ly/46WT50TUhkh

Well done to clinical lead nurses Karen Tennant and Lucy Buttery who have delivered their first active bystander training to clinical teams in Erewash, supported by Ismaa Ramzan, head of inclusion and belonging. 👏 Karen and Lucy plan to join forces again to deliver more sessions in the community care division to support the staff to recognise any forms of discrimination within the workplace and provide tools to actively challenge this.

Congratulations to clinical operational manager Katie Kuzera, one of our new Queen’s Nurses here in DCHS! Katie said she was inspired to become a learning disability nurse by her auntie Janice who has Down’s Syndrome and complex health needs. “Janice provided me with the delightful insight into understanding and supporting people with learning disabilities from a young age and I wanted to develop my knowledge further, hence why I applied to study learning disability nursing at the University of Nottingham,” Katie said. “I am very proud to say that I am a learning disability nurse and I would encourage anybody who has an interest in supporting people with neurodevelopmental disorders to study this unique and fulfilling role.”
