About us

Derbyshire Constabulary serves an area of more than 1,000 square miles and a population of around one million. In the north of the county rural areas of the High Peak, Derbyshire Dales and the Derwent Valley attract a significant amount of tourism, with Matlock being the county’s municipal capital and a town which, along with Bakewell, the Chatsworth Estate and the spa town of Buxton, are famous throughout Britain The county is also home to old mining communities, modern towns and business centres. At its core is the vibrant and culturally diverse city of Derby in which more than 70 different languages are spoken. This diversity makes policing the county both challenging and rewarding, and a total of 1,933 police officers, 163 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), 237 members of the Special Constabulary and 19 volunteers are tasked with keeping Derbyshire one of the safest counties in the country. The constabulary also employs 1,451 staff members, making it one of the biggest employers in the county. The force strives to meet its commitment to the people of Derbyshire. We are committed to providing a high-quality policing service. Our purpose is to prevent and reduce crime, attack criminality, protect vulnerable people, provide reassurance and deliver value for money. We are a forward-thinking police force who use social media as a professional tool to reach an ever-increasing online community. Many of our 95 Safer Neighbourhood Teams also have one or more member on Twitter, ensuring that our messages are far-reaching and expansive. In 2014, the force earned a top recognition for our commitment to communicating with the county’s deaf or hard of hearing population, the Louder Than Words charter mark - the only force in Britain to obtain such an accolade. • Speeding… it’s a hot topic that regularly comes up in our comments section. You might believe a little bit of speeding is okay and shouldn’t be targeted by the police, or you might think that it is the most serious of crimes... but what’s the truth? The fact is, speeding kills. In 2022, 303 people died on UK roads because drivers were travelling above the speed limit. All those people have family, friends and loved ones left behind due to drivers choosing to go above the limit. One of the many ways we look to tackle speeding is through Community Speedwatch groups, which involve proactive volunteers holding speed check sites in problem areas of their community. Our Community Speedwatch volunteers give up a huge amount of their time, often on top of their day jobs, to protect their area from speeding motorists. They give a lot to us, so this year we wanted to ensure they knew just how valued their work is. On Saturday 1 March we held our third Community Speedwatch conference, which was attended by 80 volunteers from our local CSW groups, alongside police staff and officers who support them in tackling speeding. The morning featured an important guest speaker, Dr Steph Alger, who talked through her personal experience of speeding, and the emotional loss of her son Etienne. Steph highlighted the importance of speeding initiatives such as Community Speed Watch, and the real-life impact they can have to the lives of people within Derbyshire. The attendees were then split into groups to engage in workshops showing the speed monitoring equipment available, and how best to use it. We also took the time to thank our volunteers, as their support and commitment to preventing speeding is fundamental in continuing our work to save lives on Derbyshire roads. We know policing isn’t just about tickets, it’s also about education and community involvement, and Community Speedwatch encompasses the two. Our officers will step in and ticket drivers when necessary, but we want more than that. We want to really educate drivers on why speeding does matter, and why it is something we’ll continue to target to keep Derbyshire safe.

  • Looking for something different to do with your spare time? We caught up with Special Constable Williams, who is new to his volunteer role and has spent the last few months getting stuck into a range of shifts - especially the football. Our special constables are dedicated individuals who, after a hard day at work, still have the enthusiasm and passion it takes to devote some of their free time to help others. If policing the football takes your fancy, then like SC Williams, you can request to work on matchdays. If it’s policing our streets at night and keeping those enjoying the city's nightlife safe that you would enjoy, then working a Friday evening has your name on it. Peaked your interest? You can learn more about the role on our website, https://lnkd.in/ena84x7Y
