Some great tips here from Project Drawdown blog on bringing climate change and solutions into the classroom. Many of them resonate with ourselves. "Cultivate curiosity and a sense of noticing " https://lnkd.in/eZRMS9mE

It's International E-waste day today (that's anything with a plug, battery or cable) and it's all about raising awareness about one of the fastest growing domestic waste streams in the world. Although there's a lot more that large technology and consumer electronics companies need to do in their design and business models to redesign and reduce it.... There's also things we can do as citizens. If you want to get involved you can take part in the @recycleyourelectricals_ Great Cable Challenge https://lnkd.in/ezNZiThN or @internationalewasteday e-waste hunt https://lnkd.in/dqnvFPK This is a topic at Design Nature we're also passionate about and run school redesign e-waste challenges, exploring the topic, the system and designing potential ways to improve it! #ewaste #internationalewasteday #circulartech #Redesigners #circulardesign #schoolschallenge #ecoschools #rdguk

On 9th October, our director, Mark Mason FRSA, was joined by Ian Guppy of Feelgood Creative to support two class groups of Y5 pupils, and teaching staff, from the Civitas Academy, on a very exciting school trip exploring Renewable Energy and Air Quality. The session began at the Ecotricity Wind Turbine on Green Park, with a fabulously engaging 'Turbine Talk' by Ian Gough of REDUCE ENERGY LTD who introduced the children to the engineering and science behind renewable energy, and talked more widely about climate change. Following the talk, we put our CALM:ER (Clean Air Living Matters: Exploring Reading) hats on, and gave the pupils hand-held air quality measuring devices as we walked from the wind turbine to the sister school, Green Park Village Primary Academy. Along the route, the pupils followed a map and stopped periodically to observe levels of Air Pollution and record them on data sheets. To find out more about the CALM programme and invite us into your primary or secondary school in Reading, please visit the Reading Borough Council website - https://lnkd.in/eGJz5TzB It was an extremely rewarding and educational activity to be involved in and a big thank you to Emma Wareham, from Civitas Academy, for letting us work with your amazing pupils. https://lnkd.in/eJqi3Eqw #RenewableEnergy #AirQuality #AirPollution #ClimateEducation #rdguk

Professor of Climate Science | Creator of Warming Stripes | MBE | National Centre for Atmospheric Science, University of Reading
The UK has now stopped burning coal for generating electricity. This is excellent news for the climate, and also for air quality. Recently, Jim McQuaid and Kirsty Pringle generated simple stripe graphics to show how air quality has varied over the past 170+ years. For London, the changes in air quality follow the variations in coal burning over the entire time period. There is more work to be done on air quality - coal is not the only factor now - but stopping burning coal (and petrol, diesel, fossil gas, etc) will save many lives every day from improved air quality.
