We’re getting closer to creating a new wetland habitat thanks to your incredible support! We’ve got £12,000 left to raise to fully fund this impactful project by September 30th. This is a fantastic opportunity to support the creation of new wildlife shelters and habitats for species like beavers, butterflies, and birds. 🦫🦋🦉 Want to help? You can make a donation via the link below (don’t forget to add ‘Wetland’ in the comment box) or reach out to us directly. 🐟 Thousands of Bluefin Tuna Return to Devon's Coast After Successful Conservation Efforts 🌊 Exciting news for marine biodiversity, the majestic bluefin tuna is making a comeback off the coast of Devon! A few weeks ago, I posted about the incredible abundance of marine life we used to have along the British coast. Back in 1766, naturalist Thomas Pennant described our seas as being filled with life: "These immense shoals of herring were trailed by schools of enormous bluefin tuna...the sea appeared black with their numbers, a living expanse teeming with multitudes of fish as far as the eye could see." Today, we’re beginning to see a resurgence of that former abundance. In this video, you can see the return of Eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna (some reaching up to 10 feet in length), chasing mackerel off the coast of Devon. With an estimated population in the thousands, these sightings offer a promising sign of their ongoing recovery. The revival of this once endangered species is largely credited to stringent conservation measures and international fishing quotas. While overfishing drove them to near extinction in British waters by the 1990s, focused efforts to protect these marine giants are showing success. Some scientists also believe that changing sea temperatures may also be contributing to their return to northern waters. The comeback of bluefin tuna offers a glimmer of hope that dedicated conservation can truly reverse the damage inflicted on our marine ecosystems. I fully believe that with our continued efforts, we have the power to restore our oceans back to their former glory. Thank you to Hugo Tagholm for bringing this positive development to light!
