We’ve known insulin for over a century now, but that doesn’t mean we know everything about it. Our researchers discovered that the shape of DNA plays a role in controlling how much insulin we make, paving the way for new diabetes treatments. ‘Alone we can do little, but together we can do much’. Deepthi is one of our amazing volunteers and has been giving talks, sharing information and raising awareness in her local communities this year. She’s noticed there are lots of myths and misconceptions about diabetes circulating in the community, and online, but through talking to more people about diabetes and offering them credible support, she’s found they start to gain more interest and want to understand more about managing diabetes, or preventing type 2. We can see how much of a big difference this is making for people in her community – a huge thanks to Deepthi and all our amazing volunteers 🙌 Feeling inspired? Last week, we were thrilled to give our supporters an exclusive peek inside the lab and a chance to connect with our researchers at Imperial College London . We’re funding Prof @nicksoliver's team to tackle type 1 diabetes stigma, and Dr @aida-martinez-sanchez-a437813a’s lab to deepen our understanding of how beta cells produce insulin👏 We got to see islets under the microscope and how glucose affects them🔬 Plus we put our pipetting skills to the test - congrats to Ahmed, whose pipetting prowess won him a cuddly beta cell! 🥳 A huge thanks to our hosts and all the researchers who made this inspiring and fun-filled evening of diabetes science possible💙🧡

We're proud to announce our new partnership with The Draper's Company as they support our vital work. Supporting children and young people living with type 1 diabetes is a cause close to Drapers’ heart, and their funding will support our work, including our events for children and young people living with type 1 diabetes. Excitingly, four members of their team have embarked on a 1205km bike ride across the four nations. This amazing journey will take place over 10 days to raise funds for us. The weather will be unpredictable, as the riders navigate their way south over an ascent higher than Mount Everest on their arduous journey across the country to promote their appeal and spread awareness of diabetes. Let's talk about… How unacceptable it is that, in 2024, Black people still face unequal access to care and support for their diabetes. It’s not ok that health inequalities continue to exist for Black people living with diabetes, and we should all be challenging our own assumptions, calling out racism wherever we see it, and working together to make change happen. We all have a responsibility to act, and to ensure that by #ReclaimingNarratives that have historically overlooked Black people and communities, that they're given the resources, opportunity and voice to be at centre of this change. Throughout the month we'll be celebrating some of the incredible work happening – not just during #BlackHistoryMonth but all year round – to address unacceptable health inequality.
