Digital Leaders Week 2024 was another tremendous success! We’re proud to have contributed to pivotal discussions on the future of AI in the UK and the societal impacts it can bring. Elizabeth Vega OBE joined a panel in Parliament, exploring the profound impact of AI on society and discussing how the UK can lead in this transformative space. Meanwhile, David Lawton, Chief Innovation Officer at Informed Solutions, spoke at the National Digital Conference 2024 in Manchester. His focus? Tackling the complex journey of scaling AI from proof-of-concepts to national platforms and services. David was joined by Dr. Laura Gilbert CBE, Director of the A.I Incubator at 10 Downing Street, and Simon King, Director of AI at DWP Digital, on an insightful panel chaired by Mark Thompson. They shared valuable experiences in scaling AI across organisations like Citizens Advice, the NHS, NatureScot, and DWP. A central theme emerged: the importance of creating frameworks that safely accelerate the scaling of AI platforms and services, with a strong emphasis on compassion and user-centricity. David reflected that to see more large-scale AI success stories, we need to evolve our approach to discovery and service design. While human-centered practices remain essential, there’s a pressing need to ensure data is fit for purpose and to address deployment challenges early on. Making this a reality requires a responsible, collaborative approach to innovation—one that sees suppliers working transparently with the government. We were also honored to present the Digital Leaders 100 SME Award to TellJO and de Novo Solutions. Congratulations to all DL100 winners! Robin Knowles #DLWeek #DL100 #AI

Great speakers at the Digital Leaders: Public Services in the Age of AI event today. Really interesting and thought-provoking discussions. Here are my key takeaways: Jo Miller, Director of Technology quoted that "The future is already here. It's just not evenly distributed." A great opening keynote! Dr. Laura Gilbert CBE, Director for i.AI discussed the importance of "radical transparency" (love this phrase) in building trust and transforming how people interact with government. Commodore Rachel Singleton, Head of the Defence AI Centre discussed a key challenge of developing AI and digital capability in Defence at a pace that's relevant. Also an additional challenge of using AI to keep our forces relevant within a competitive environment with high stakes. The led onto risk versus reward - what are the impacts of adopting AI versus not adopting AI in a defence context. We explored the question 'how do we triage AI use cases'? - by looking at the problem we are trying to solve and asking ourselves 'what is the decision we are wanting AI to help us make?' This was compared with the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act), a military decision making framework based on speed and adaptability (similar to Agile). This absolutely resonated with me considering my own military experience. On my way home, I found myself reflecting: Am I a digital leader, I'm in the HR space?! I came to the conclusion that the broad expertise and adaptability I've gained through embracing multiple roles in product development, empowering my team to lead projects, upskilling others, and sharing best practices across government and private sectors, I believe I'm on that path. #DigiLeaders #DLWeek #AI #PublicServices #Innovation #Leadership

A fantastic evening at the Annual Digital Leaders lecture at Parliament yesterday. It was great to tune in to Gilles Babinet and the panellists: Claire Calmejane, Elizabeth Vega OBE, Jean Innes, and David Knott 🧠 An insight that stood out for me, were learnings from The Alan Turing Institute on what everyday consumers care about when considering the future of AI: 1) Can AI be effectively regulated globally? This is crucial to building trust into the technology. 2) Can consumers engage with a human being when they disagree with an AI decision? Reaching a societal consensus on who has the "final say" in these situations will play a key role in shaping the future of AI products and services. Elizabeth Vega OBE also highlighted the importance of developing AI with civic society in mind, advocating for “pull” communications - engaging civil society in AI development and procurement, rather than “pushing” AI without due consideration to end outcomes. Great bumping into ★ Madush Gupta ★ from our Centre for Finance, Innovation and Technology (CFIT) board on the way in! #DigitalLeaders #AI

Tech and AI leaders gathered in Parliament last night for one of the many kick off events across the country for Digital Leaders Week 2024. We were treated to a talk by Gilles Babinet France’s Digital Champion, Co-Chair of France’s Digital Council and an advisor to President Emmanuel Macron. Gilles’ talk comprised the #DLWeek Annual Lecture to Parliament. Gilles covered many topics, but I loved his summary of the work he’s led in France called “Café AI (or Café IA). The “Cafés” are a real, organic approach to engage the French citizens everywhere - especially in rural communities far removed from the hustle and bustle of major tech centres like Paris. It’s in these forums that Gilles and his teams are attempting to reach 10 million citizens. So far, they’ve reached 120 communities in places like Orgeval, Annecy, Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Floirac. They are hoping to engage, to encourage debate and to help communities learn how AI may affect them and how to prepare for the future. Most importantly, they are providing the French with a voice, where increasingly the disaffected feel like they don’t have one. I think what’s most interesting here is the Gilles is driving and executing on a French digital strategy of inclusion. It’s as if the French Digital Council has stated: “No French woman, man or child will be left behind.” There are terrific lessons for public servants and the Labour Government here: take the subject of digital and AI inclusion to the communities! Delivering the public service of digital and AI inclusion where the people actually are. Gilles was very open as well about how his inspiration for this came from the UK, and specifically Martha Lane Fox who has been a major force for digital champions here in the UK. Thanks Robin Knowles for a great night. And to Samantha Niblett MP who hosted a great panel afterwards with Gilles, Claire Calmejane, Jean Innes, David Knott & Elizabeth Vega OBE. #PublicService #AIforGood #DigitalLeadersWeek #DLWeek2024 #DigitalInclusion #AIInclusion #TechForGood #CaféAI #AIForEveryone #RuralCommunities #TechLeadership #FutureOfWork #PublicServiceInnovation #DigitalStrategy #AIEngagement #AIForAll #DigitalTransformation #UKTech #FrenchTech #DigitalEducation #GillesBabinet #MarthaLaneFox #AIInclusion #TechPolicy #CommunityEngagement #AIAndSociety #TechInParliament #DigitalFuture #TechInclusion #PublicSectorInnovation #AIAndThePeople #ThinkTank
