The significance of Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Risk Assessment (RA) should never be underestimated. Though generic risk assessments are usually completed by competent personnel during a project's build-up phase and support on-site work scopes, 'Dynamic' (On-site) JHA/RA often fails to receive the same level of attention. While generic JHA/RA efficiently covers repetitive actions, on-site risk assessments are continuously changing due to factors like weather, tides, or shipping movements. As a DSS Lead Auditor, I recently had the opportunity to 'walk the tag' alongside a Client Supervisor on a commercial vessel. Lockout-tagout (LOTO) meetings are essential safety measures when it comes to conducting diving operations on vessels. ⚓ These meetings involve following and documenting a clear, step-by-step process with open communication channels. As the maritime industry predominantly operates in English, it's crucial that supervisors have a solid understanding of both spoken and written English to avoid any miscommunication or crucial details being 'lost in translation.' I had the pleasure of chairing an impromptu safety meeting at the Balboa anchorages in Panama. Our key team members came together just before heading off to different assignments. We gathered to discuss the safe operations of a client's newly-built diving tank, intended for training and practice in skills like welding and polishing. Our objective was to devise a Work Instruction (WI), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and Emergency Response Plan (ERP) for this diving tank located at their Colon fabrication factory. As the DSS Lead Auditor and MD, I facilitated a well-structured approach towards achieving our goals.
