Over a month ago, DONNE | Women in Music released a report highlighting a significant gender disparity in classical music. The findings revealed that 92.5% of the repertoire played by over 100 orchestras worldwide was composed by men. Donne Report 2024: https://lnkd.in/eyrinkn6 Our additional analysis shows that 89.9% of chief conductors are men, with only 10.1% being women. This stark contrast underscores the need for greater diversity and inclusion in orchestral leadership and programming. The women who have managed to break through this glass ceiling include Marin Alsop, Simone Young, #ElimChan, Kristiina Poska, #DaliaStasevska, #EvaOllikainen Intermusica, Han-Na Chang, #AnnaMariaHelsing, #JoannaMacGregor, #NathalieStutzmann and Mei-Ann Chen Read more about these findings: https://lnkd.in/eKFwV_kP

Breaking the Sound Barrier: Film Scores by Women Composers The music industry, where creativity should know no gender, as we know still faces significant inequality, in all music genres. Our recent study of the top 200 grossing films of 2023 showed that only 10% of composers were women, compared to 90% men. This stark disparity highlights broader issues across all music genres, where women's contributions are often underrepresented and undervalued. These statistics matter! Film music is a major revenue opportunity, with a total box office earnings exceeding $21.5 billion in March 2023. The exclusion of women from these high-profile projects translates into substantial financial loss and limits their career growth. Despite the immense talent and potential of women composers, the market is still not providing equal opportunities. To create a truly inclusive music industry, we need action from education institutions, industry leaders, and audiences. Mentorship programs, scholarships, and initiatives promoting female composers are crucial. By actively supporting music created by women, we can amplify their voices and ensure their contributions are valued equally. Share this post, raise awareness within your network and be all contribute for a more inclusive music industry.

Huge thanks to Freya Parr and the Classical Music team for the opportunity to talk about such an important issue and a cause that is deeply close to my heart. "Women still face under-representation and under-recognition in all sectors of the music industry. As a classical singer, I see at first-hand the scarcity of works by under-represented composers in professional repertoire. I see a lot of trends, but I don’t see them sticking. Greater diversity in programming would bring greater diversity in our audiences too. How do we ensure this momentum continues? Will the organisations with the biggest reach and financial capacity commit to change?"" Read here: https://lnkd.in/df7_hj7T #womeninmusic #gabrielladilaccio #lethermusicplay #mulheresnamusica
