Supporting the blind and partially sighted community of Dorset to live happy and independent lives.
About us
Supporting blind and partially-sighted people to live happy lives. We provide practical help and emotional support to enable people with sight loss to stay healthy and happy. Caring for people since 1918, we now help 1,000 people every month, county-wide, powered by our 400 trusted volunteers. We bring ongoing friendship and support so people feel positive about what they CAN do, to realise their full potential. ___________________________________________________________________________ Sight loss can cause depression and isolation. Our emotional support through trained Community Support Workers, buddies, social clubs and inclusive activities help people to come to terms with their sight loss and our practical services such as equipment, training, benefits advice, transcription to audio and braille empowers people to move forward with their lives. There are over 30,000 people living with sight loss in Dorset and this number is growing while council support and benefits have been cut. We believe sight loss shouldn’t mean missing out, so please help us to relieve loneliness and isolation for more people. Our charity relies 100% on fundraising to raise the almost £400,000 a year we need to support our local community. To make a donation or volunteer, contact 01202 712864 or visit www.dorsetblind.org.uk Your contribution could help us bring the light back into one more person’s life.

Ferndown Town Mayor Celebrates Local Hero’s Fundraising Efforts at Dorset Blind Association Social Club We were thrilled to welcome Ferndown Town Mayor, Terry Cordery, Town Clerk Liz Bishop, and Jane Benton from Ferndown Town Council to our Ferndown Social Club last week. They joined us to celebrate Margaret, one of our amazing members, who has raised over £500 by selling her handmade cards and jewellery! Despite her own visual impairment, Margaret’s hard work is helping keep the club running smoothly. The special guests presented Margaret with a bouquet of flowers as a token of appreciation for her contribution. The visit also provided an opportunity for the Mayor and Town Council members to meet with the club’s attendees, learn more about our services, and witness first-hand the supportive and welcoming community our amazing volunteers at Ferndown have created. A huge thank you to Margaret and to the Mayor and team for their visit and support! We’re also looking for volunteer drivers to help transport our members to the Ferndown club which meets fortnightly on a Tuesday. If you can help, or if you or someone you know could benefit from our services, please get in touch. Contact Gemma@dorsetblind.org.uk if you can help. Your support makes a world of difference to visually impaired people in our community #DorsetBlindAssociation #FerndownSocialClub #VolunteerDrivers #CommunitySupport #FundraisingHero #VisuallyImpaired #SupportLocal #TogetherWeCan

Exciting News! We are thrilled to announce that thanks to a generous £36,000 grant from Dorset Freemasonry, the Dorset Blind Association will be able to provide essential support and services to over 500 blind and visually impaired individuals across Dorset. This funding will help us continue our mission to relieve loneliness and social isolation by supporting over 20 social and activity clubs for older blind individuals. These clubs are vital for creating a safe and supportive environment where members can connect, share experiences, and build friendships. The grant will cover venue hire, transport, and entertainment costs, ensuring our clubs can thrive for the next three years. Our CEO, Jonathan Holyhead, shared, "We’re immensely grateful to Dorset Freemasons for their generous support. This grant will allow us to relieve the loneliness and isolation that is all too common among blind and visually impaired people. Our charity provides help and support in ways that make a real, positive difference in those people’s lives.” Stephen James from Dorset Freemasons added, “I’m very pleased we’ve been able to help the Dorset Blind Association with their hugely important project among visually impaired people from our community. Sadly, loneliness and isolation are all too common among people who have lost their sight, and it’s great that this wonderful charity is able to organise regular social activities and entertainment for them on a long-term basis.” At Dorset Blind Association, we are committed to providing lifelong, tailored support to our members, ensuring they stay happy and healthy despite the challenges of sight loss. This grant is a testament to the power of community support and the incredible difference it can make in people’s lives. We were pleased to welcome Stephen James along to our Weymouth social group last week to meet some of the members who will benefit from this funding. Thank you for your ongoing support!
