At Dot we seek to offer our clients a best-in-class solution for each asset class within private markets. We believe that Practical Venture Capital’s strategy for VC investing is a one stop solution, combining both fund and direct investments in secondary markets, achieving a shorter-term fund with more resilient downside protection through lower entry valuations. PVC 3, which will have a first close later this year, targets 3X DPI in 7 years by buying into existing funds that are already 5-10 years old. PVC is seeking to raise USD 100m for this third vintage, which will be deployed within 3 years in a mixture of LP and GP fund positions, as well as direct company investments. Investments are mostly made in secondary markets, usually at a significant discount to previous fundraising rounds. We believe that the strategy is especially well suited to deploy capital during periods of valuation downturns in VC, making this third vintage a particularly attractive proposition. Last week provided a stark reminder that public markets can be very volatile. The prices of listed shares respond to human emotions, and none more so than fear. Suggestions that the US economy might be in recession first sent Asian markets plunging, with the Nikkei 225 index falling more than 10% last Monday. The VIX "fear index" of equity volatility spiked from around 20 to more than 65 before settling at 38. Many investors will have responded by selling shares in panic. By the end of the week, however, most developed markets had recovered from Monday's losses. Private market valuations, on the other hand, were unchanged last week. One of the many benefits of private markets is, ironically, that investors cannot quickly sell their investment. The value of a private company (its equity and and its debt) primarily reflects its fundamentals (growth, profitability, balance sheet, management team, etc.) and is naturally stable over short periods of time. Private markets can thereby provide stability and diversity in a broader portfolio of stocks and bonds. The ability to avoid panic selling (and greedy buying) is critical to long-term investment success.

According to a group of private bank CIOs polled by Citywire, continued concern over valuations in venture capital have them pointing clients in the direction of secondaries. PE and VC secondaries have many virtues, among them portfolio transparency, greater liquidity, and discounted pricing. We are proponents of secondaries and we're proud to partner with leading GPs in PE and VC secondaries. Register on our website to find out more. 🎙 Yesterday, Luke Dixon, CFA, CAIA held a DotCast with Katrina Liao, Investment Partner at Coller Capital, where she shared invaluable insights on private market secondary transactions. 💡 One standout moment was when Katrina summarised the essence of secondary private equity: “Secondary private equity is about creating liquidity in an illiquid market. It provides sector and vintage year diversification, quicker cash returns, and a faster reinvestment pace, making it a vital component of a robust investment portfolio.” Katrina’s 14 years of experience shone through as she discussed the nuances of GP and LP-led deals, emphasising the strategic value of secondary markets for investors seeking early exits and diverse portfolio growth. Here is a sneak peek into the recording where she explains the role of secondary private equity play in portfolios.👇 #dotcast #privatemarkets #secondaryopportunities

The mid-market has seen a marked rise in activity this year, with areas such as life sciences, technology and media being of particular interest for managers looking to build platforms through acquisitions in private markets. Distressed credit is another strategy that’s also seen a rise in activity, with both the underwriting of opportunistic credit and working out deals that have gotten into trouble being engineered in restructurings. These signs of increasing activity in the mid-market provide an encouraging atmosphere for the wider private market investment ecosystem, which has been somewhat stagnant in exits during recent years. An increase in the activity of private market deals should provide investors with further liquidity and the subsequent need to reinvest. #privatemarkets #investments #privateequity Kinson Lo Luke Dixon, CFA, CAIA Felipe Massu Rhett Hendrix David Musu' Christine Tsai
