Today is World Mental Health Day, with this years theme being workplace mental health. To mark this our founder Dr Richard Bailie shares his personal views on expert witness work in the Family Courts to support those thinking of entering this valued field and help them consider if this is a good option for them. We have openings on the associate team for qualified psychologists with over 3 years experience looking to work with families as an Expert Witness.  Dr Bailie recognizes that team mental health is a priority and ensures you have support, guidance, training, regular lunchtime online get together's and peer mentoring to support you in your new role making this a fantastically supportive workplace to advance your career into this field. 𝗗𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲'𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: I have been an Expert Witness for the Family Courts for almost 20 years. Most of that time, part time alongside my NHS role.  Working as an Expert Witness for the Family Courts is not for everyone. But I believe that experienced clinical psychologists are uniquely equipped to serve the Courts, and should consider this work as part of their practice.  In both NHS and Expert Witness work, compassion is at the heart of my practice. Compassion is a catalyst for change: through compassion I achieve engagement with families facing the Family Courts, families who are understandably guarded and worried about the future. I work collaboratively with the families to understand their past and agree what needs to change for the children to be safe and happy. In both NHS and Court work, I use the same skills to engage, assess, formulate and give an opinion about a client, but as an Expert Witness I can typically undertake a more in-depth assessment, one that gets to the bottom of the complexity, and gives advice on what will make a difference. It is rewarding to complete thorough and well-informed assessments.  The Expert Witness work has developed my skills and confidence in assessment, psychological formulation, opinion and report writing. The NHS work has brought a knowledge of local services. I found it daunting to start Expert Witness work. I was fortunate to have support from a senior colleague that enabled me to navigate this new field. I have established a community of psychologists, to support those who want to develop their skills as an expert witness. We support and mentor one another to deliver best practice.  If you enjoy the challenge of complex presentations, working with children and adults, and writing evidence-based recommendations, then Expert Witness work is a good fit for you. If you have skills in Cognitive, ADHD and Autism assessments, then we need your expertise. If you also want to work therapeutically with these families, we are developing services to offer treatment. Get in touch to find out more. #WMHD  #mentalhealth  #WorldMentalHealthDay
