The fundraising environment for private capital funds has been relentless over the past decade. Average PE fund closings stretched to 26 months in 2022 (Financier Worldwide), with first closes hitting 11 months in 2023. Global PE fundraising dropped 24% to $589B in 2024—its third straight decline (McKinsey 2025)—while VC fell 18% to $104.7B, a six-year low (Venture Capital Journal). New PE funds crashed to 952 in 2023 from 2,284 in 2022, the fewest since 2013 (S&P Global), and the top 25 fundraisers grabbed 41% of 2023 commitments (McKinsey 2024).
