"I would be on a very different set of drugs if I didn’t have that [WGS] result, and those drugs might not be as effective in reducing my recurrence of cancer". The Personalised Breast Cancer Programme is now operating at five sites across England, including three Trusts in the East region: - Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and - East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust The research programme analyses DNA like a barcode and is leading to more tailored treatments for breast cancer patients that are helping to better manage, and treat their cancer. "If I had known my risk of cancer when my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I’d have caught it [breast cancer] when it was just a pea sized lump, instead of the tumour getting much bigger and spreading. I think it’s something that I and others would always fight for." Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eU_7GKcZ #BreastCancerAwareness

Just read Chris Hoy’s story in the Sunday Times, and we share a Stage 4 Prostate Cancer diagnosis, bone mets and all. His positivity matches mine but I do not believe that my life is limited to 4 years (Chris was given 2 to 4 years), especially when friends Steve and Tony have lived 7+ years thanks to abiraterone. Three interesting things from the interview: 1. Chris had two generations before him with PCa diagnosis yet he wasn’t apparently eligible for PSA testing on NHS, being younger than 50. My own polygenic risk score of 2.6 means my sons will get PSA testing from age 40. 2. Chris shares my hope that advances in PCa treatments will make it possible to live longer with the currently incurable disease. There are a few reports of Stage 4 “cures” but steady the horses. 3. Chris’s Tour de 4 bike ride from Glasgow to Edinburgh will hopefully support PCa charities in same way as the Big Blue Bike Ride supports Prostate Cancer UK. I managed to raise £4K this September past on the BBBR thanks to friends & family. Stay positive all you guys with Stage 4 PCa and get your friends to have a PSA test!

Some great stats form our friends at NHS South East Genomic Medicine Service for #WearItPink day this #BreastCancerAwareness month. Closer to home, a ground-breaking breast cancer programme pioneered at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, which decodes the genetic sequence of a patient’s cancer, is to expand in the East region. More details to follow in the coming days....
This #WearItPink Day, and we share some facts about #genomics and #breastcancer. Each year, in the UK there are around 56,400 women and 390 men diagnosed with breast cancer. Around 5% - 10% of people with breast cancer are thought to carry an altered gene. Gene mutations can significantly increase the risk of someone developing breast cancer. This includes genes such as #BRCA1 and #BRCA2, alongside a number of other genes which have been recently discovered. Gene changes are more likely to occur in people with a strong family history of breast and ovarian cancers. Families with a high-risk gene can benefit from testing, additional screening, and other risk-reducing options. This highlights the importance of genetic testing and counselling! #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth South East London Cancer Alliance I Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance I Breast Cancer Now I Breast Cancer UK I CoppaFeel!
