East Midlands Development Company
Government Administration
The East Midlands Development Company aims to create 84,000 jobs & add £4.8bn to the regional economy.
About us
The EMDC is one of the biggest opportunities to “level-up” the Midlands. The coalition of councils behind the proposed East Midlands Development Company wants to promote and enable three major development zones which respond to key government agendas. The zones include the East Midlands Freeport area and emerging plans to turn land near one of the UK’s last coal-fired power stations into a centre for net zero technologies. Collectively the size of three London Olympic Parks, the zones have the capacity to add 84,000 jobs and more than £4.8 bn in value to the regional economy over the next 25 years. East Midlands Airport area: which supports the region’s status as a centre for advanced manufacturing & research, and is a national and international logistics gateway siting at the heart of the new Freeport zone Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station site: transforming part of the site of one of the UK’s last coal-fired power stations into a national centre for carbon zero technologies and manufacturing innovation which is also within the Freeport area. Toton & Chetwynd: creating a new, connected community.

Great to see the region come together and demonstrate a compelling commitment to #greengrowth through investment in a large-scale #hydrogeneconomy cluster.
A new industrial partnership is to launch the UK’s largest inland hydrogen cluster - here in the East Midlands. East Midlands Hydrogen brings a unique proposition from partners including Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership Limited, D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, Cadent Gas Limited, Uniper, Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, Midlands Engine, and East Midlands Freeport. The cluster is in the heart of the country – unlike other coastal-based major hydrogen sites – and brings together an intensive cluster of hydrogen demand forecasts from around 70 industrial sites in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and northern Leicestershire. For these sites alone, access to low carbon hydrogen would enable carbon savings of 1.9 million tonnes per year - the equivalent of gas-related carbon emissions from 860,000 homes. Neil McGhee, LLEP Board Member and Low Carbon Champion, said: "To help those businesses, protect jobs, and to capitalise on the growth opportunity of a new hydrogen economy, we need to ensure that those manufacturers are able to access low carbon hydrogen." An official launch event is happening later this month.
