More than 280 people across the east of England have received specialist training to support asylum seeking children separated from their parents or carers. The region’s Strategic Migration Partnership (SMP) organised 14 training sessions between September 2023 and August 2024 which were split between 6 courses - age assessment, triple planning training, human rights assessment training, brief enquiry training, a UASC information session delivered by the International Organisation for Migration and UASC voluntary returns service awareness. This important training equips the region’s children’s services teams with the tools to assess and care for separated migrant young people. #Training #LocalAuthority #UASC #EastofEngland #JoSchofield #IOMUNMigration #UKHomeOffice

Community engagement is essential to ensure services are accessible for all. Listening, learning and coproduction will help to create better resources that reflect the needs of different service users. In partnership with Monica Franklin CMgr MCMI and South East London Integrated Care System we spent time at Ellen Brown Children and Family Centre in South East London speaking to parents about their experiences and understanding of preconception care using the fantastic resources produced by Tommy's. #Talklistenlearn

The region’s Strategic Migration Partnership is appealing for more people to become volunteer mentors to support young refugees and asylum seekers currently in education or looking for work. Ferzana Kusair, High Skills Employment Advisor for EELGA SMP’s Employability for Overseas Nationals (EON) project, said: We are looking for mentors in tech, engineering, architecture, as well as pharmacists, nurses, lawyers and more on the corporate side, like accountants. “We want to reach out to any potential mentors out there who want to make a difference to the lives of overseas people.” Refugee Action and Refugee Education UK (REUK) are among the charities seeking volunteer mentors, with REUK saying they have around 80 young people on their waiting list. We are always grateful for feedback. Thank you Greg Campbell for such great comments.
Cultural Awareness Hub Event With Brentwood & Rochford Council What a thought provoking and dare I say slightly uncomfortable day. Millie Kerr presented , trained, informed and educated those in attendance on Equality & Diversity. It challenged my thoughts and preconceived ideas on what ‘E & D’ was and is about, and how wide and deep it went. Considering all the layers making up identities, intersectionality, Adultification, language, assumption making and the need to be more curious and to ask the questions that you need answering which can make you feel uncomfortable. I really appreciated the discussions on discrimination and the continual challenge to look at life, people’s perspectives and where they are coming from through a different lens and certainly not a negative lens Important point to me was the consideration of trigger words and where your ‘lens’ went because of certain words. Followed by the need to listen with an open ‘lens’ I thought the session was powerful and finished off with words from John Ameechi who challenged the phrases people us ‘I am not racist’ and ‘I am anti racist’ and what this meant, are we passive in our approach or going to take a stand. The latter is far more difficult but is where I should be. The day provided a challenge on where I am as an individual, my assumptions and beliefs. I think like many organisations we have real challenges ahead to continue to deliver our best to all areas of society and be relevant in a modern and changing world. Thank you to the East of England Local Government Association and Millie Kerr for putting this event on.
