Managing Eating Disorders and Devotion during Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar in which Muslims around the world fast from dawn to dusk, abstaining from food and drink. Muslims break their fast with a celebratory meal often in a communal setting. Muslims with eating disorders may feel guilty and ashamed for not being able to fast during this time. However, it is important to remember that Ramadan is not only a time for fasting. It is also a time for devotion and connection with God- through prayer, self-reflection, charity, and other acts of kindness. According to the Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah verse 184) fasting is not obligatory for- those who are ill, pregnant/nursing, travelling, young children and the elderly and highlights alternative ways of taking part during this month. This therefore applies to people struggling with eating disorders and eating distress. Anyone who may find this time challenging can contact Eating Distress North East- we provide specialist and confidential information, support and counselling. #EatingDistress #EatingDisorders #Ramadan

This Self-Injury Awareness Day, we'd like to share that self-injury and eating distress is often linked. They are both a coping strategy for difficult emotions and/or stressful events. Sometimes people will view their eating distress behaviours as self-injury too. At EDNE, we support people with their eating distress and self-injury if this is something they are struggling with. We will help you to identify triggers, and develop more positive coping strategies and ways to regulate your emotions. If you'd like to register for our 1-1 counselling service or groups, you can refer yourself or ask a professional to refer you. Our referral form is on our website as well as information about the services we provide. #EatingDistress #EatingDisorderRecovery #EatingDistressRecovery #SelfHarmRecovery #SelfInjuryAwareness

#EatingDisorders significantly impact the LGBTQ+ community in the UK, with prevalence rates notably higher than in non-LGBTQ+ populations. Approximately 20% of LGBTQ+ young people have experienced or are currently experiencing an eating disorder, compared to 7% of their non-LGBTQ+ peers (stats from Just Like Us research). Research indicates that gay and bisexual boys are significantly more likely to engage in behaviours such as binge eating, purging, and fasting compared to their heterosexual counterparts. A substantial 87% of LGBTQ+ youth report dissatisfaction with their bodies, a factor closely linked to the development of eating disorders. These statistics underscore the heightened vulnerability of LGBTQ+ individuals to eating disorders, highlighting the need for targeted support and interventions. #EatingDistress #EatingDisorderRecovery#EatingDistressRecovery #LGBTQ+#EDAW2025 #EDAW

#EatingDisorders affect anyone, from any community. More attention needs to be given to how eating disorders are identified and the barriers to support that people face. At EDNE, we use the term eating distress because we will work with you if your relationships to food, exercise or your body causes you distress – with no need for a diagnosis. Having a diagnosis of an eating disorder describes the way someone behaves within their eating distress, it does not define the validity, intensity, or impact of the eating distress. Anyone can have an eating disorder, and we believe everyone can look forward to the future with hope and confidence. If you want EDNE to be part of your journey to recovery, find out more about how we can help. https://lnkd.in/eFxQwyhq #EatingDisorderAwarenessWeek #AnyoneAnytime #RecoveryIsPossible
