ecoLogicStudio is a design innovation agency specialising in bio-digital technology for the built environment. Co-founded in London in 2005 by Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto, the company has built an international reputation for its innovative projects integrating systemic thinking, computational design, biotechnology and digital prototyping. ecoLogicStudio’s vision is to transform the way our urbanising society lives and inhabits our cities. We will achieve this goal by bringing together innovation in biotech, digital design and fabrication to deliver design innovation for the fast growing green and smart building industries. “There is untapped value in bringing the bio-intelligence of natural systems into cities, turning buildings into living machines that produce energy, store CO2 and clean the air. AirGarden, London Bridge. AIR.garden pioneers the vision of interior restorative spaces in the heart of Londo. AIR.garden deploys the biological intelligence of micro-algae to revolutionize the role of nature in the workplace. At the core of AIR.Garden is microalgae Spirulina, one of the Earth’s oldest and most powerful photosynthetic organisms. Spirulina is ten times more efficient than plants at photosynthesis, making it a game-changer for nature symbiosis in the built environment. AIR.garden actively captures the CO2 equivalent of five mature trees. It also filters air pollutants and releases oxygen. The filtration process grows raw biomass with super-food nutritional value, including vegetable proteins and vitamins, pioneering the restorative workplace that supports employee’s health while taking care of the health of the planet we share. Crafted with living, biological and bio-degradable materials, this elegant furniture system is fully reversible. Bespoke 3D-printed components made from algae biopolymers support the borosilicate glass reactor containing the living algae cultures. This demonstrates a fully circular design approach where the biomass grown in the air purification becomes design material.
