In a recent Sustainability Magazine article, Building Research Establishment (BRE) have been urging the construction industry to be at the forefront of climate change proactiveness. The building sector produces 40% of carbon emissions worldwide and the BRE CEO, Gillian Charlesworth, has stated that the built environment can play a vital role in achieving net zero emissions. Gillian hopes to increase the use of innovative construction materials and methodologies in achieving net zero goals and BRE's ongoing research includes exploring low-carbon concrete alternatives. Building sector emissions are growing at an average of 1% per year since 2015 whilst energy efficiency investments fell 7% between 2022–2023 according to Breakthrough's Agenda Report 2024.
