🦗 We're developing innovative sustainable cricket protein farming technologies 🚀

About us

edibl is an innovative UK start-up growing insects (principally Crickets) to re-cast our approach to protein in the food chain for both humans and pets. We do this through the use of automated technologies and modular circular methodologies within vertical farms which are designed for urban and rural environments and utilise local energy, recycled waste food and water resources efficiently Our output is used in the production of low-impact, high-quality, nutritious, and inherently sustainable food products. And it's quite delicious too, actually! We are currently closing our Seed raise (SEIS/EIS) and plan to be in production early 2024 with several pre-orders from leading and progressive food brands who are struggling to find insect protein supply within the UK, to keep up with the demand from consumers for novel foods like insects in both pet and human food products. Updates

  • Did you know... October 23rd is World Edible Insects Day! That's today. So our founders @Daniel and @Geoff took a photo to celebrate this fact. Our cricket farm in Norfolk is expanding fast, as more people wake up to the fact that insects are the key to a reliable and sustainable global food supply. Crickets are very much part of the Asian and Latin American diets and have been for generations, however, this protein source is still seen as a novelty in much of the Western world. But with more people travelling and experiencing new cultures this is opening minds to new ideas around food! Crickets are starting to make their way onto more plates. #insectprotein #sustainable food #crickets

Cricket frass (Cricket poop) is a natural soil conditioner and fertiliser 🌱 With nutrients galore and plant immune-boosting properties, this cricket poop, also known as frass in the industry, could be the next big thing in soil regeneration! At edibl we are not only about cricket protein, there are a lot of valuable extracts and verticals to the business. Frass is just one of the byproducts we have at our farm in Norfolk. Just another reason to invest in edibl. #AgricultureInnovation #AnimalFeed

  • What is your opinion? Will we all be dining on crickets and mealworms at dinner matched with a nice glass of wine? Is this just a passing trend that you’d rather ignore? Singapore selected 16 types of edible insects fit for human consumption. They spent two years of checking various insects edibility. Bugs have been making appearances on the streets of Singapore for ages, but until now, they’ve never been served in upscale restaurants. Why the sudden change? It’s all part of Singapore’s plan to be a more self-sufficient! Their aim is to produce 30% of their own protein by 2030, instead of importing every last crumb. So here we are—bugs are climbing up the food chain, and it’s about time! Do you think they are they the next big protein source or just another culinary oddity? 🦗 Edible insect start-up currently raising! 💸

Very interesting and insightful post from David. Daniel Levan-Harris 🥭 & I were also wary of the large raises, big dreams (and facilities) of the European pioneers, albeit for BSFL. Plus they've pivoted to pet food (from animal feed) which is a decision edibl - The UK Insect Company took several years ago given the high-volume, low-price pressure in the animal feed wouldn't be a good product-market fit for establishing the lower-volume and premium/high-price of any insect product at this stage in the sector. I do wish all insect companies the very best. If they succeed, we all succeed.

""Ÿnsect raised over $600m on a hugely ambitious bet. Now, it needs to start making serious money"   This article is talking my language. Ÿnsect has done a fantastic job, making big moves in the insects for food and feed industry from a very early stage. It acted quickly on information that was available to it at the time to be a first mover, so credit must be given to Antoine Hubert and the team for what they have achieved. I feel there have been some critical mistakes in the learning process and I feel this is happening at many other high-profile insect start-ups.   💡 "Managing insects’ life cycle has been one of the biggest challenges the company has faced". This is a common problem I've found on my Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust travels. Why spend crazy amounts of money on a process that you don't (or anyone in the world) fully understand. This rings true for investors putting their cash into something that is extremely complicated and not yet understood.   💡 "Ÿnsect designed a larger factory because the company, at the time of launch, was targeting customers in fish feed — an industry that requires mass volumes. Since then, the company has changed its focus: it now plans to produce mostly for customers in pet food." I suspect this pivot is because black soldier flies are now the focus for aquafeed. This pivot is exactly what is needed, however once you have invested in such a facility, you are fixed on that investment as are your options to pivot.   So what is the answer? What can we collectively learn from incredible entrepreneurs like Hubert and their own journeys of discovery? Quite simply, don't expand beyond your means. This industry is complex, so grow steadily and sensibly. Budget in a pivot, or maybe two, before you find the golden ticket to success. This gives your journey of discovery more freedom to test, learn, fail and go again.   “You can always re-make history. But once the farm had launched, it was too late.”   Despite all of this, Hubert is confident the company is on the right track, he just needs more runway. Best of luck, let's see what happens.
