Seagrass restoration: worth getting stuck in the mud for?! Earlier this month, Earth Fellow María García-Blanes Martínez and Earth Fellows programme manager Chloe Francis accompanied colleagues from the The University of Edinburgh Department for Social Responsibility & Sustainability and Green Shores to saltmarshes near St Andrews. "We spent a fantastic day collecting sediment samples so that we can measure the effects of seagrass restoration in the area. As well as providing habitats for wildlife, seagrasses are highly effective carbon sinks - we look forward to seeing them flourish in this area again, together with the saltmarsh next to it." - Chloe Francis, Earth Fellows programme manager María, currently an Environmental Protection and Management MSc student at The University of Edinburgh, is supporting the Coastal Carbon Baselining project, working with the Department for Social Responsibility & Sustainability team to create a coastal carbon baseline within the Eden estuary. We’re delighted to be kicking off another series of profile posts with our 2024/25 Earth Fellows cohort! Edinburgh Earth Initiative's Earth Fellows programme provides paid opportunities for undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students at The University of Edinburgh to work on projects of strategic importance related to climate, environment, and sustainability. Now growing into its third year, the Earth Fellows community is a vibrant and supportive network of students from across levels of study, disciplines, and countries. First up, meet María García-Blanes Martínez - Postgraduate Earth Fellow: Coastal carbon baselining Maria is currently an Environmental Protection and Management MSc student at the University of Edinburgh. As an Earth Fellow she is supporting the Coastal Carbon Baselining project. She has previously undertaken a Biochemistry BSc and worked within several research groups under this discipline before deciding to bring this expertise to the extensive task that is the characterisation of climate change effects and carbon mitigation. QN: What is your background and how do you think it will help you in your work as an Earth Fellow? My background is in biological sciences combined with environmental protection and management, which allows me to apply scientific knowledge to find sustainable management solutions. Since my current project is mainly science based, my background allows me to utilise this knowledge to hopefully find efficient and scientifically relevant solutions that will be useful for future projects. QN: What is your project at the Edinburgh Earth Initiative about, and what is your role within it? For my project, I will be working with The University of Edinburgh Department for Social Responsibility & Sustainability team to create a coastal carbon baseline within the Eden estuary. For this, I will review the relevant literature to gather state-of-the-art information about coastal carbon sampling and monitoring to create a methodology that could be applied in subsequent years to study the carbon stock evolution over time. In addition, to this, we will carry out soil carbon sampling to create the initial carbon baseline, that will be used for the future evaluation of the carbon stock changes within the area. Interested in learning more? Look out for updates on Maria's project and check out the Earth Fellows Edit 2023/24 - the most recent edition of our annual publication, showcasing the work of Edinburgh Earth Initiative’s Earth Fellows programme: https://lnkd.in/eEBb6Qmr #climatechange #university #edinburgh #research #students #coastal #carbon #biologicalscience

Thoughts on climate change from the Impact Festival: "We need to shift to Plan B" “Plan B is the worst-case scenario, and that’s what we need to be shifting to,” said Professor Sean Smith, Director of the Centre for Future Infrastructure in the Edinburgh Futures Institute, during a panel discussion on climate challenges as part of The University of Edinburgh’s inaugural Impact Festival. ‘Engaging with the Climate Emergency’ brought together researchers from across the University of Edinburgh to share their experiences of working with policy and industry partners in response to a variety of challenges presented by the climate emergency. The panel, which included Prof Smith, Mark Miller - Centre for Cardiovascular Science and Bernice Maxton-Lee - University of Edinburgh Business School, discussed the opportunities and challenge of effective communication and strategies for feeling burdened by despair or hopelessness when engaging with the climate crisis. Attended by students and staff, the Impact Festival featured a programme of 28 events with colleagues from across the University, speaking on topics such as working with partners to develop impact; influencing policy and practice; maximising impact from fundamental and interdisciplinary research; and co-creating impact with artists, and with communities. Redefining Impact: Community-driven sustainability research in Scotland’s UNESCO Wester Ross Biosphere Extractive and colonial approaches have been common in research, which give little back to communities and can worsen pre-existing inequalities when local cultures are ignored. A recent movement of activist academics and problem-focused researchers is pushing back by collaborating with non-academic partners to address societal challenges. Dr Zoe Malcolm, Lecturer in Sustainable Development, School of Social and Political Sciences, The University of Edinburgh adopted a participatory approach to research with the Wester Ross UNESCO Biosphere, a volunteer initiative pursuing sustainable regional development. Find out about how local communities are being empowered through research and the ways in which participatory methods are driving sustainable approaches and outcomes.
