Timor-Leste education data indicates resilience in girls who have displayed higher enrolment rates from pre-primary school to secondary school. Additionally, there is a low repetition rate for girls in all these learning levels and on average, girls are performing better than boys. Despite having scant data on girls’ access to digital technology in Timor-Leste, UNICEF’s report on girls’ digital literacy in Southeast Asia emphasises that when ICT education is available, there are efforts to make learning inclusive for girls. Nigeria faces significant challenges in EdTech infrastructure, particularly in the northern regions. Only 5.66% of primary schools have computers, highlighting the urgent need for investment in digital education. The government is working closely with partners to bring out the best initiatives that curb some of these challenges, including building teachers' digital skills, where currently, 71.66% of teachers are unfamiliar with using digital tools for learning. This rapid scan, developed on request from FCDO-PLANE Nigeria, Ian Attfield, Mikailu Ibrahim, Emily Koester, Elizabeth Adelman, and FHI 360 together with Sharanya Ramesh Vasudevan and Oluwatomisin (Tomi) Oyedele presents some of the opportunities, challenges, and EdTech initiatives in Nigeria. Did you know that in urban areas of the Laos People's Democratic Republic, 95% of girls and boys attend primary school compared to 77% of girls and 83% of boys in rural areas without roads? Many households in Laos continue to value traditional gender roles, wherein women are expected to assume caretaking responsibilities and shoulder the domestic burden. The intersecting issues certainly create challenges for inclusive learning for girls — but what are some of the opportunities? Find out more with our Laos rapid scan: https://ow.ly/zBFc50TRmcG

Girls in northern and northeastern Kenya face significant barriers to education, including early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and specific cultural norms. In some regions, fewer than 30% of girls sit for secondary exams. These challenges not only limit their future opportunities but also hold back their communities. Now is the time to invest in girls' education and break these cycles of inequality. Can we empower girls through education, technology, and community support? Read our report on how decision-makers can ensure inclusive learning environments: https://ow.ly/ek7550TMGUn

This week, we have been connecting with our partners in Southeast Asia as our Executive Director Verna Lalbeharie joined discussions to explore equitable EdTech in the region. She focused on learning solutions for excluded groups, including learners with disabilities, out-of-school children and youth, girls, and minoritised language communities. We are pleased to share photo highlights from the event. Follow for more!

Over the past 25 years, efforts to advance women’s rights in Cambodia have made progress, yet gender inequality remains a persistent challenge. Restrictive social norms still limit women’s participation in cultural, economic, and political life. Women hold just 21.6% of parliamentary seats, despite making up 51.8% of the labour force. Girls face hurdles in education, with unpaid domestic duties often keeping them out of school. However, we see collaborative efforts like UNESCO’s Room to Read and MoEYS’s strategic plan aiming to break these barriers and empower women. Explore opportunities and barriers for a more equitable future: https://ow.ly/JQEG50TMn8G
