  • Professor Rose Luckin quoted in Sir Anthony Seldon's recent piece in the Times this week: “We need a much richer understanding of human intelligence and how it differs from artificial intelligence if we are really going to make sure that the AI makes learners smarter rather than dumbs us down,” said Professor Rose Luckin, Founder + CEO, Educate Ventures Research To read the article, click below. • Most people wouldn't think of polls, questionnaires or surveys in relation to AI, but actually they're exceptionally useful for gathering structured and unstructured data. Are you aware of how your data might power the AI technology that your children and family members use? Take Professor Rose Luckin's AI Readiness Online Course for only £10 during this half-term holiday. => Access the course here: https://lnkd.in/eZUADxWz 🎸 "Surveying is a specialist activity. When it comes to making population claims, it is unlikely, for instance, that any school or educational business would have the number of participants and the rigour that would enable a claim to be made about the entire population, but nevertheless it is one of the potential advantages of a survey 🥁 "When it comes to specialist activity, however, it’s useful to understand there are lots of different types of survey. Some are descriptive, some are explanatory: we can use surveys to describe a particular population, or we can try and explain what’s happened to the behaviour of a particular population" #ai #machinelearning #data #datascience #technology #humanintelligence #ethics #risk #safety #privacy #surveys #polls #questionnaires #developers #entrepreneurs #digitalstrategy #airegulation #policy #educators #teachers #parents #heads #headteachers #students #pupils #learners

Creating an AI enabled, openly licensed and fully resourced curriculum for teachers and pupils as co-founder and Director of Product and Engineering at Oak National Academy | Founder and Board Chair at Edapt

Nice to see Educate Ventures Research draw out some of the fairly unique things we have in place to support Oak National Academy’s AI lesson Assistant, Aila. Quality and safety are really important to us, and we’re putting a lot of focus on this (accepting that AI will still make mistakes- just like a human!). We’ll be writing up more on this over time, but here’s two of the things we’re doing: - An asynchronous content moderation agent which is aligned to the content guidelines in Oak’s content, so that what Aila creates is safe for use and age appropriate. - A separate evaluation tool that is used to test the efficacy of changes to models and prompt engineering. As well as to check safety alignment, we can use this tool to check pedagogical alignment and quality. For example to test how good the distractors are in multiple choice questions generated (are they plausible and is the answer non-guessable). And don’t forget the whole product is open source so you can inspect and use the prompts and the evaluation tools! See links in comments.

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Oak Academy, the developers of the AI-enabled learning assistant, Aila. They shared with us all the controls they have in place, and the measures they're taking to ensure that Alia generates lesson plans that are pedagogically sound and also promote teacher agency. A great example of which can be found in the blog post here: https://lnkd.in/gQ5nvdw6 As a result, we've updated our risk assessment of Aila to reflect the new information they've shared.

  • Coming up in Professor Rose Luckin and the EVR team's 'Beyond the Hype' report, on AI use and understanding in schools across England in the first half of this year, a 'Tale of Two Systems': 'Perhaps one of the most striking narratives to emerge from our data is the stark difference between different types of educational institutions. Independent schools and colleges consistently reported higher scores across most AI-related measures, from awareness and implementation to ethics and safety protocols. State schools, on the other hand, often lag behind. Our analysis revealed significant differences between types of educational institutions: 🎺 Independent Schools: -             Consistently higher averages across multiple AI-related fields. -             Notably higher scores in AI Ethics and AI Safety, indicating a stronger focus on these crucial areas. -             Lead in AI Leadership, suggesting more established strategies and policies around AI. -             Higher averages in "Students other than learning," particularly in the post-16 phase. -             Relatively higher confidence levels among teachers inside the classroom. -             Stronger performance in ethics, leadership strategies, and AI policy implementation. 📻 Colleges: -             High scores in AI Safety and Leadership Averages, indicating robust leadership in AI use and a focus on safety. -             Strong AI Awareness Average and AI Ethics scores. 🎷 State Schools: -             Generally lower averages across several AI-related fields. -             Lag in AI Use and Leadership, especially in the Primary and Early Years phases. -             Lower scores in AI Ethics and Safety compared to Independent Schools and Colleges. -             Lower averages in teachers' confidence both inside and outside the classroom. -             Lower overall adoption or focus on AI policies compared to Independent Schools and Colleges. 🔔 Post-16 Phase: -             Across all school types, tends to have higher averages in most AI-related fields. -             Indicates more active engagement with AI in later educational stages. 📣 Primary and Secondary Phases: -             Ethics measures and students learning classroom environments are fairly consistent across school types. -             Independent Schools tend to lead slightly in these areas. 'This disparity paints a picture of an education system at risk of further exacerbating the existing digital divide. As AI becomes more prevalent in education, there's a real danger that pupils in better-resourced schools will benefit more from these technologies, potentially exacerbating existing educational inequalities. These institutional differences also highlight potential resource or policy gaps that need to be addressed, particularly in state schools.' • From our upcoming 'Beyond the Hype' Report... Professor Rose Luckin's EVR had 250+ schools across England complete a self-assessment survey on AI use and understanding between Feb and May of this year, and our soon-to-be-released report will go into detail exploring the findings... 'The Professional Development Imperative: Our survey highlighted a clear need for more robust professional development programs focused on AI. Institutions with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes in place for AI showed positive correlations with several key areas: 📣 Clearer identification of educational goals for AI use (correlation of 0.41) 🎤 More engagement with ethical AI practices (correlation of 0.34) 🔔 Higher AI use by teachers (correlation of 0.33) 🎙 Greater overall AI awareness (correlation of 0.31) These correlations suggest that investing in AI-focused professional development could be a key driver in successful AI integration.' A useful report from Educate Ventures Research, built around a set of relevant, and pragmatic, questions concerning #ai and its adoption in educational institutions in general, and #k12 in particular - some of high-level strategic focus requiring CEO/leadership attention, and others more operational and to be addressed by targeted working groups. For each question, there are insights and recommendations from leaders at the very front of conversation in this space - which a school can consider in relation to their own future actions. This makes it a useful guide, as you navigate your way through responding to the considerations raised by AI. My takeaways: 1. Strategic Approach for AI Integration: The report outlines the importance of creating clear AI strategies, which align with a school´s educational vision. 2. AI Literacy for All: The report emphasizes the need for training all stakeholders - teachers, students, parents, and policymakers—to ensure understanding of AI’s role in education. 3. Curriculum and Assessment Overhaul: As AI is integrated, we need to gradually rethink curricula and update assessment methods. 4. Professional Development for Teachers: To effectively implement AI in classrooms, teachers need training and ongoing support. #AIinEducation #EdTech #ArtificialIntelligence #FutureOfLearning #k12 #highereducation Universidad Camilo José Cela SEK International Schools SEK Education Group

Professor, AI and Education Thought Leader, Author and Speaker

Today's snippet from the "Beyond the Hype" benchmarking report we are publishing here: https://lnkd.in/ejay9FMn Today, let's talk about confidence in AI Tools Our data reveals the AI tools that are making the biggest impact in schools and colleges in England - which tools are gaining traction and why? Unsurprisingly, general-purpose chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini are leading the pack. These versatile tools are being employed for a range of tasks, from routine administration to content generation. Their accessibility and broad applicability make them a popular choice for educators dipping their toes into AI. However, as I cautioned in Issue 8 of The Skinny, we must be wary of the hype surrounding these tools. While they offer exciting possibilities, they also come with limitations and potential risks that need to be carefully managed. When it comes to more specialised educational needs, tools like MagicSchool and Teachmate are gaining popularity. These platforms are designed specifically for classroom use, offering functionalities that align closely with daily teaching practices. Their success underscores the value of purpose-built educational AI tools. However, the prevalence of these tools also raises important considerations: - Digital literacy: How can we ensure that both teachers and students are equipped to use these tools effectively and critically? - Equity of access: Are all schools able to access and benefit from these tools equally? - Pedagogical integration: How do we best incorporate these tools into existing teaching methodologies? - Ethical use: What guidelines need to be in place to ensure responsible use of AI in education? As we continue to explore the potential of AI in education, it's vital that we approach tool selection and implementation thoughtfully. We need to consider not just the capabilities of these tools, but how they align with our educational goals and values. What's your experience with AI tools in education? Have you found certain tools particularly effective? How are you addressing the challenges of implementation? #AITools #EdTech #DigitalLiteracy #AIinEducation #SkinnyonAIED #AI #EdTech #Edchat #Leaders #innovation #technology #Learning #Students #Teaching #Edreform For more thoughts like this read the skinny here https://lnkd.in/gTaNTRkb
