Tests like the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) reveal how well students across the world perform in critical subjects such as reading, mathematics and science. For countries aiming to boost their PISA scores, particularly those consistently underperforming, one promising path is curriculum reform that applies the principles of cognitive load theory (CLT), pioneered by John Sweller. In this article, Dr Richard Churches, our Director of Research and author of the book Neuroscience for Teachers, and Dr David Johnson of the University of Oxford, discuss the potential of using CLT as part of curriculum design. Focusing on a CLT-friendly approach to curriculum reform can free up the time needed to teach the sort of lessons that the higher-level PISA questions demand. Read here: https://lnkd.in/ew_SPjxx

Professionally trained school leaders play a pivotal role in learning outcomes. The National School Leadership Training (NSLT) was one of the key pillars of the TARGET programme, which we co-led with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education. TARGET was funded by the UK government and supported The World Bank-managed multi-donor trust General Education Quality Improvement Programme for Equity (GEQIP-E). Taking a competencies-based approach, TARGET’s NSLT upskilled over 11,000 school leaders across Ethiopia, with almost 100% of them improving their practice. The country’s Minister of Education, Berhanu Nega, praised the training and emphasised the importance of continuing it for long-term impact. The NSLT has brought about widespread change across Ethiopia’s education system. Find out more about TARGET here: https://lnkd.in/eqcJrPqt

As our Director of Research Dr Richard Churches has observed, the international benchmarking that this student assessment programme provides has driven remarkable change in Brunei since it began participating in 2018. Episode 12 of our podcast, Brighter Futures, focuses on the global education benefits of such tests, featuring Richard alongside England’s former schools Minister the Rt Hon Nick Gibb, and our Director South East Asia Dr. Louise Pagden. 👩💻 Listen online: https://lnkd.in/err2VyTH 🍎 Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/eNGKby7f 🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eKtw6mmP 📱 Listen on Amazon Music: https://lnkd.in/e7ZfC-dn
