A BDM’s log # 17
Normal 'logging' service resumed today and I’m easing back into this with a reflective look back to a rather special Tuesday evening, earlier this week.
It’s clear that Autumn has well and truly arrived – but to ‘biblical’, wet proportions rather than crisp, cold, sunny days that make it the favourite season for many – me included. Who then in their right mind would head into the City of London, after the working day has finished, donning umbrellas and raincoats on such a grim, rain-soaked evening to engage in meaningful conversation about AI and data strategies in the public sector?
And yet…
Joining our first public sector roundtable, that’s exactly what a dedicated group of digital leaders across central government did!
Expertly hosted by our co-chairs, Mark Thompson, CDIO at the Cabinet Office, and Richard Semple, CEO at UK Shared Business Services Ltd (UKSBS), discussion was engaging, lively and hugely insightful – ‘watch this space’ as we share further updates on our company page.
For me, AI as a general concept is HUGE! Harnessing its power and capability in an ethical way, which truly enhances the employee experience while supporting better outcomes for citizens, presents a challenge – and one with great responsibility – to the good people sat around the table on a grey, rainy night in Searcys at The Gherkin.
At Egress – with data quality at the heart of what we do, to ensure organisations have the best possible data as a foundation on which to make solid business decisions - we recognise too that AI, knitted into data management and digital transformation strategies very much represents the future.
What’s that well-worn phrase – ‘the genie is out of the bottle now’ - but this is a benign genie I think, which presents great opportunity for innovation – tempered, of course, with control and common sense!
It was abundantly clear from Tuesday's conversation that the digital 'movers and shakers' in Central Government, Agencies and Arm’s Length bodies have ‘got our backs’ for sure (I’m a citizen too 😊) and are embracing new ideas and approaches with gusto and aplomb!
Chapeau bas folk!
AI isn’t new, this much I understood from the discussion, but its potential is, well, mind-blowing! I loved the energy and passion in the room on Tuesday – especially on such a dismal night (did I mention it was raining?) so…
Thank you to...
Shehroze Junejo, Luke Marshall-Waterfield, Jeremy Gould, Tim Wheelhouse, James Weston, Chris Gullick, Syeda Nayyab Z. Naqvi, PhD MBCS, Darren Goode, Rob Gibney, Thomas Husselby
I wonder if we could persuade some of our digital leaders in Local Government to further this discussion… Roundtable; 'AI and Data - the Sequel' has a nice ring to it, yes? 😉
