It's tough being a startup. You have a vision for the world that you can see so clearly, and early on you get a lot of confused faces. Often people in construction might defend the current process, "we've always done it like this... so it must be working right?" Even though, 10 seconds later you ask "what is the current method for analysing weather today?" "Gut-feel, yeah not science based at all..." BUT! This is not a post about people still coming to terms with the fact that they could be doing things wrong. This is a post about a partnership. Our oldest partnership. Going all the way back to when we started this journey in 2020. BAM UK & Ireland are the construction company who said gut-feel isn't good enough, lets work together and create a new approach. Its radically different, but it's not really radical. Use science, data, analysis, to make better decisions that ultimately save time and money. Not radical, obvious. We are approaching 5 years of working with BAM and this blog post was written to describe all the hurdles we've overcome and the new climate resilient industry we are helping to forge. I recently did an experiment... I spoke with 25 construction experts about the weather. This is what they had to say: 1. Biggest Issue Caused by Weather - Delays in Construction (61%): The most frequently cited issue was weather-induced delays in construction projects, particularly due to rain, wind, and extreme temperatures. - Damage to Works (22%): Another significant concern was damage to completed or ongoing work due to weather conditions like flooding or extreme winds. - Productivity Loss (17%): Some respondents highlighted that weather directly reduces construction productivity, which in turn affects project timelines and costs. 2. Is Weather a Cost Problem, a Time Problem, or Both? - Both (89%): Nearly all respondents agreed that weather is both a time and cost problem, often intertwined. Delays caused by weather directly translate into increased costs, whether through extended project timelines, damaged materials, or increased labor costs. - Time Only (11%): A smaller portion mentioned time as the primary concern, with cost being a secondary effect. 3. Suggested Solutions - Better Weather Forecasting and Planning (38%): A significant number of respondents suggested using more accurate weather forecasting tools and incorporating these forecasts into project schedules. - Contingency Planning (28%): Building weather contingencies into project plans, including buffer days and additional resources, was another common solution. - Alternative Construction Methods (22%): Some suggested using off-site construction methods or modern construction technologies to minimize the impact of weather. - No Feasible Solutions (12%): A few respondents indicated that, despite best efforts, weather issues are largely unavoidable and must be accepted as part of the risk in construction projects.
