About us

Elect Her is a tiny but mighty organisation that works to motivate, support & equip women in all their diversity to stand for elected office in all spheres of Government, providing them with the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to do it. We work with women from across the political spectrum – we are non-partisan or even multi-partisan. We take no policy position on any topic in order to be truly inclusive. We want all women who are interested in exploring their political future to feel welcome and accommodated within our work. We equip women with the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to stand for political office. We work across the political spectrum, and welcome women from all backgrounds and beliefs, representing all parties and none.

We won Apolitical Foundation's inaugural Political Leadership Impact Award 🙌🫶 The reason? In the past 8 years over 9,000 women 💥 have accessed our resources and community. We’ve supported 459 women to stand for elected office, 199 of whom have won their elections! All incredible women, all making democracy possible. And our work doesn’t stop there, in the last few years we’ve listened deeply to the barriers to entry for women and have created a roadmap for change with 45 levers that we can ALL pull to make the difference. • Since 1918 we have had thousands of male MPs. In that same period we have had 693 women MPs... Think we can safely say that men have been overrepresented! And consequently it means we haven't had the outcomes we deserve. Time our demoracy reflected our society.

More men than women have been elected at every UK general election since 1918 The first women gained the right to vote with the Representation of the People Act on 6th February 1918. Later that same year the first female MP was elected, although she didn’t take up her seat. It wasn’t until Nancy Astor was elected in a by-election in 1919 that the first woman took up her seat in the House of Commons. Our graph shows that at every general election since 1918 the number of men elected has outnumbered the number of women - sometimes very significantly! In fact since 1918 only 693 women MPs have been elected compared to thousands of men over the same period. Until 1987 the number of women MPs elected never exceeded 30, despite a female Prime Minister having been elected. The number of female MPs rose slowly, reaching 60 in 1992. In 1997, it doubled to 120 - marking the first time women held over 10% of seats (18%). Though it briefly dipped in 2001, the number of female MPs has increased at every election since. Today we have 263 women MPs, making up 40% of MPs for the first time. Whilst this progress is to be celebrated we still need to elect another 62 women to achieve a #GenderEqualParliament#AskHerToStand 50:50 Parliament Elect Her CIC Electoral Reform Society Fawcett Society The WI (National Federation of Women's Institutes) Helen Pankhurst Girlguiding

97% of councillors are not women from minority communities, leaving a large gap in the voices we need at the table. We had a brilliant launch night of the work of Professor Khursheed Wadia, of University of Warwick and supported by the Muslim Women's Network UK (MWNUK), whose research looks at the barriers to local politics but also, critically, how we change the future. And the practical recommendations make it all feasible. It’s a job, let’s treat it as one! Read more here 👉https://lnkd.in/eTyFSzyf

  • Local parties are a barrier to diversity. Those are the findings of recent research by Dr. Rob Ford & Dr. Chris Butler. "Overall, our findings show that despite the record number of women and ethnic minorities elected to Parliament, such candidates still appear to face discrimination at the selection process." Yet we know more diverse voices creates better outcomes, for all of us. https://lnkd.in/dpH42RMY

  • How do we change outcomes? Better representation. Minoritised women make up 9% of the population but only 3% of local representatives. The Muslim Women’s Network UK’s (MWNUK) latest report reveals barriers into elected office & once there the institutional barriers that exist, partly due to the gendered division of councillor duties. This research provides 15 ways to fix the system and improve representation! Join us and report author Professor Khurseed Wadia for the launch of the new report - Tuesday 4th February at 7pm 👉https://lnkd.in/esFSTjvy

What is inspiring? Councillor Siobhan Paterson! She has organised a First Step to Stand event, using our Elect Her toolkit. More than 80 women are coming who want to get involved in local politics. The event is even mentioned in Parliament by Euan Stainbank using an early day motion to draw attention to just how important is! More women in politics = better outcomes for us all! You can organise one too - reach out and we’ll help 👉https://lnkd.in/ecy9E2bu
