POWER & PROPULSION: World’s first installation of #rotorsails on a Capesize bulk carrier completed for Vale Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Vale International have retrofitted a 200,000-ton class bulk carrier with two 35 x 5m Norsepower rotor sails and marked its first call at Ponta da Madeira, Brazil. According to the partners, this is the world’s first case of rotor sails on a #Capesize bulk carrier. The vessel is expected to achieve 6-10% reductions in fuel and #GHGemissions on routes between Brazil and the Far East, combined with voyage optimization technology. AUTONOMOUS TECHNOLOGY: Kongsberg Maritime to #remotelycontrol an #autonomousbarge across the Oslo Fjord In a collaborative project with the help of Norwegian telecommunications provider Telenor Maritime, a zero-emission electric barge, owned and operated by grocery distributor ASKO, will be equipped with Eutelsat OneWeb’s latest Kymeta Peregrine u8 flat panel antenna system as part of a trial of Eutelsat OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet service. This antenna system aims to expand ship-board connectivity at sea. Pål Andrè Eriksen, senior vice president of remote and autonomous solutions at Kongsberg Maritime, commented, "Through the successful demonstrations of our remote and autonomous technologies on several groundbreaking pilot projects, including the Asko barges, Kongsberg Maritime has already proved that remote and autonomous technologies are applicable to different vessel types." NEW VESSELS: Asia’s first offshore wind power service operation vessels arrive in Qidong Shanghai Electric Wind Power Group Co., Ltd. has taken delivery of what it says are Asia's first offshore wind power service and operation vessels (SOVs) Powered by a diesel-electric and lithium battery hybrid system with full electric propulsion and DC bus bar distribution, they hold hybrid power and green ship classifications certificated by the China Classification Society (CCS). FERRIES: Uber Boat by Thames Clippers’ third hybrid passenger ferry enters operation on the #Thames Uber Boat by Thames Clippers’ brand-new hybrid passenger ferry, #MarsClipper, has entered operation in central #London. The UK capital’s first hybrid passenger ferry, Earth Clipper, was launched in September 2023 and was then joined by Celestial Clipper in March 2024. “We want to make London’s river travel the best and most #sustainable transport option in the world,” said Sean Collins, co-founder and CEO of Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. “We are immensely proud of being able to launch our third #hybridvessel in less than 12 months. Seeing these wonderful boats sail the Thames together is a momentous day for Uber Boat by Thames Clippers and this symbolizes our commitment to achieve a #netzero status by 2040." FERRIES: Scandlines zero direct emissions #ferry enters final phase of construction Construction of the €80m (US$89m) E/V Futura at the CEMRE SHIPYARD in Turkey has entered its final phase. “We are very much looking forward to putting our first emission-free ferry into operation on the #Puttgarden-#Rødby route. REGULATION: International Chamber of Shipping presents revised proposal for #emissions fee and green fuel pricing incentivization Working with the governments of #Bahamas and #Liberia, the International Chamber of Shipping (#S) has presented a comprehensive new proposal to ensure delivery of the UN International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) ambitious target to achieve #netzero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping by or around 2050. Guy Platten, ICS secretary general, commented, “It is time for governments ‘bite the bullet’.
