Launch, operate and coordinate multiple markets for flexibility and distributed energy.

About us

Electron’s purpose is to accelerate the energy transition by unleashing renewable abundance. To do this, we're working to transform the way energy is traded to unlock resilient, low-cost, zero-carbon energy systems. We've made it our mission to help grid and system operators and municipal suppliers adopt flexibility markets to manage grid congestion, improve connection rates, and lower bills. Our platform, ElectronConnect, is built to get those markets ready for scale, with more markets, running more often, and in a more connected way. These features help grid operators optimise their electricity networks, fast, for a decarbonised energy future.

📣 PRESS RELEASE 📣 Electron, Arup, Energy Systems Catapult, and partners join forces for phase 2 of Flex Markets Unlocked 🎉 The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has chosen the consortium to continue with phase 2 of the innovation project, which combines their expertise in digitalisation and flexibility markets, to develop solutions which will boost the flexibility of the UK’s energy system. The project will build three components: a Universal Market Register, along with the relevant data standards and primacy rules. The combined benefit will help more flexibility service providers (FSPs) offer their flexible capacity into markets efficiently, breaking down barriers to entry 🙌 Read more ➡️ https://hubs.la/Q02VvvbD0 Harrison Leaf Mikka Alon Chris Broadhurst Jo-Jo Hubbard Marc Laitin Jeremy Macfarland

Connection queues are consistently hitting headlines, with up to 14-year wait times in the UK ⏳🔌 The Guardian just this week outlines some of the reasons behind those delays ➡️ https://hubs.la/Q02WXPBF0 This is a global issue. As we electrify and decarbonise our power systems, more generators and distributed energy resources need to plug into the grid. For large scale distributed energy resources (DERs), grid reinforcement is often required before that connection can be established. The current process for that reinforcement takes a long time as it was set up for when only one or two large-scale resources per year came online. These queues delay new revenue streams for energy assets – and often delay another source of clean energy contributing to the grid. Solutions have been proposed in the UK, such as allowing assets that are ready to connect to leapfrog those that aren’t, yet code changes also take time. This is one area that flexibility can help support the grid. DERs that agree to flexible connections can get connected more quickly, ahead of a firm, non-flexible connection. DSOs that use flexibility market platforms can also use the cumulative data to better understand where they should prioritise grid reinforcement over flexibility, helping ensure the most efficient allocation of investment to the areas that need them the most 💪 Read more on the enduring role of flexibility, from smart connections to option value ➡️ https://hubs.la/Q02WXPxQ0

What were some of the energy flexibility themes highlighted in talks at Enlit Europe 2024? 🤔 📜 There's a wish to accelerate towards a flexible system yet recognition that it will take time without regulatory support and cooperation between all stakeholders, so everyone’s on the same page. For Europe's Network Code on Demand response – which aims to help more demand-side flexibility resources integrate and connect with the energy system - more harmonisation is needed, while leaving space for innovation. This means standardisation in the right way, looking to the UK as a use case in how to set up flexibility products that leave space for distribution system operators (DSOs) to adapt to different technical requirements from their assets. 💡The rollout of supporting technology, such as the implementation of smart meters, needs to accelerate to take advantage of residential flexibility. The Eurelectric Power Barometer in 2023 highlights that there’s 56% smart meter penetration across the EU – with some countries lagging further behind than others. Consumer hardware and software needs to be upgraded so they can become true assets of the grid. 🔌 Similarly, talks highlighted that connections should be smart enabled and therefore set up in the right way for flexibility to be a possibility in the future, even if it isn’t a reality straight away. For example, EV chargers could be smart enabled for Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capabilities, to ensure they can charge their batteries and supply power back to the network when needed. 📊 Flexibility markets are growing in importance – yet asset owners need support to ensure there’s liquidity in those markets. The customers with assets that may want to connect need to be better informed on how they can get involved in providing flexible capacity – or the liquidity required to make markets a success will not be realised. The same for consumers: education is required to access their flexible capacity, which is a cheap source of flexibility. 💸 Flexibility was also discussed as a cost-effective alternative to traditional grid reinforcement in some locations, potentially saving significant investment costs. Oonagh O'Grady, Vice President at Hydrostor, shared that flexibility and energy storage aren’t “additions” to the grid but “cogs”, vital for its optimal operation. This highlights the long-term role of flexibility in our grid operations, alongside reinforcement, as we electrify our power systems ⚡
