Bringing the life science and drug discovery communities together to learn, share, connect, innovate and collaborate.

About us

The European Laboratory Research and Innovation Group UK (ELRIG) is a not for profit company whose purpose is to bring the life science and drug discovery communities together to learn, share, connect, innovate and collaborate. We achieve this through the provision of world class conferences, networking events, webinars and digital content. Our values are to always ensure the highest quality of content and that content will be made readily accessible to all, and that we will always be an inclusive organisation, serving a diverse scientific community. In addition, ELRIG will always be a volunteer led organisation, run by the life sciences community, for the life sciences community, on a not for profit basis. ELRIG has evolved from the Laboratory Robotics Interest Groups set up in North America in the early 2000’s, and has become an independent commercial enterprise, with no major benefactors nor significant funding from a single source. Instead ELRIG depends on key partners to provide rent-free venues and the vendor community to purchase sponsorship opportunities at its events. ELRIG is unique in that it considers vendors to be very much part of the life science community and incorporates presentations on their innovations into its podium programming. Led by a board of volunteers, and run by a small team of employees, ELRIG successfully hosts at least 5 conferences and 5 networking events per year, which bring together world class speakers, that present the latest research and innovation from their laboratories. Events vary in size from 40 attendees at our tier 2 events (primarily networking or webinars), to 300 plus attendees at our tier 1 events (primarily 1 to 2 day conferences), to greater than 1500 attendees at our flag ship Drug Discovery meeting. All these events are run as free-to-attend, with speaker expenses and delegate subsistence paid for by ELRIG, which is only possible due to the support of its sponsors.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Spencer, who we were honoured to welcome as a keynote speaker at our Cell Based Assay 2024 meeting. Spencer’s contributions to science were truly inspiring, but beyond that, he was an exceptional human being who left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to meet him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Stop the world from turning, dim the lights, muffle the sound. For a wee moment at least. Today January 23rd 2025, we gather in both sorrow and gratitude to mourn and celebrate the life of Spencer Shorte - a most honourable gentleman, a man of unwavering integrity and a truly beautiful soul. Spencer you were a gentle giant, not merely in your profession and stature, but in the depth of your kindness and the strength of your character. Your warm-hearted nature leaves an indelible impression upon all who had the privilege of knowing you. You were one of those rare, extraordinary individuals who radiate from within, imparting a natural and inherent wisdom, alongside an abiding serenity. You possessed a sincerity seldom seen, a quality that rendered your every word and action deeply resonant. You were a spiritus rector, a most esteemed colleague, and an inspiration to us all, a friend to many, and a brother and soul mate to some. Your life stands as a testament to the enduring power of loyalty, connection, and shared purpose. You were endowed with a remarkable gift: the ability to encourage and uplift those around you, helping them recognise and embrace their own unique strengths. You empowered others not by overshadowing them, but by lifting them up, ensuring that their light shone ever brighter. Your life was a living example of the profound impact of compassion and humility. It fills me with even greater sorrow that I can not be present at the funeral service, amidst all of you wonderful people, family and friends, who held you Spencer dear, to mourn together, to offer one another comfort, and to share in both laughter and tears, for we are the fortunate ones who had the privilege of knowing you. We are infinitely richer for having known you Spencer. Let us honour your memory by striving to live with the warmth, sincerity, and steadfast faith in the inherent goodness of others that you exemplified. May your memory remain a guiding light, as we carry forward the values of kindness and honour that you held so dear.
