Data products represent the latest effort to balance IT’s need for centralized governance with the business’ need for decentralized data consumption. Here is the balancing act. If companies centralize too much data control within IT, they create bottlenecks and throttle innovation by business units. That’s why the traditional monolithic data warehouse failed. On the other hand, if they decentralize too much control to the business units, they create inefficient processes, duplicative datasets, and governance chaos. That’s why data marts failed, and why the data mesh is fading. The emerging concept of data products offers hope. By packaging data and metadata into standard, modular, and reusable “products,” they aim to unleash innovation within the business units while maintaining efficient, governed processes across the enterprise. Like manufactured goods rolling off an assembly line, data products offer consistent standards and specifications to their consumers. They become more reliable and trustworthy inputs for analytical projects, ranging from BI reports and dashboards to predictive machine learning and now generative AI. Data teams are embracing data products. Almost half (48%) of respondents to a recent BARC survey have implemented data products, and another 34% plan to do so. Adopters cite the need for internal data sharing (69%), trustworthy data (54%), reusability (45%) and central resource constraints (41%) as their primary motivations. So will it work? I think so, provided companies get the central elements right. These include governance and DataOps. > Governance The central governance framework should have a catalog that organizes and describes data products, views of data product lineage, and a glossary that defines key terminology. It also must audit activities and controls access to data products by role and user identity. > DataOps The central DataOps framework includes tools for data pipeline development and testing, continuous integration / continuous deployment (CI/CD), orchestration and monitoring. It provides data engineers and analysts with recommended scripts and an incident management system for addressing issues. Functions such as these enable IT to enforce central governance policies and foster common best practices as business units manipulate and consume data. Data analysts and managers within the BUs can use and align with these central elements as they build, revise, and share data products. What do you think?
