About us

Our sector makes an incredible difference to the world, but it’s shrouded in unhelpful traditions, outdated measures of impact and barriers to participation. That’s why since we launched our Real Impact Manifesto in 2018, we’ve been calling out problems in the sector and changing how we work. We’re seeing green shoots of progress, but significant change will require the entire sector to commit and act. So, here in 2022, we’re relaunching our Real Impact Manifesto and asking you to join us in working towards a fairer, more equitable environment where research can have a real-world impact and those within it can reach their full potential.

Feedback from our community is often around how confusing the open access (OA) landscape can be to navigate. We understand this. It's complex and can be difficult to keep up to speed with the latest developments. For part three of our Open Access Week series of blogs, Emerald's Regional Director for Southern & Eastern Europe, Laura Bonald, delves into just a few of the OA models and what they mean, from transformative agreements to subscribe to open. Laura concludes with the need to find an equitable approach that increases OA routes for all authors, across the globe. We remain open-minded that together, with all stakeholders involved, that this will one day happen. Read the full blog, here: https://bit.ly/3BZ5aIn #OAWeek #OpenAccess #Equity

Providing sustainable open access (OA) that works for all has always been our goal. This is why our approach is embodied by the phrase ‘Open to All'. Over the years, our OA journey has evolved as we've listened to what the research community needs and wants. We've experimented with different models and we've changed direction as a result. What hasn't changed though is staying open-minded about the future OA landscape. Part two of our Open Access Week series of blogs explains all this and more. #OAWeek is here! While open access (OA) remains a sector challenge, Open Access Week is an opportunity for us all to take action and keep momentum moving forward. We don't have all the answers, but we do believe that diversity drives better outcomes for society and that this should include a diversity of publishing models and publishers within the ecosystem. So, throughout the week, we're taking the opportunity to introduce a series of blogs that offer frank and honest reflections on the current OA landscape from our perspective and experience and are based on thousands of interactions with the research and library communities. Today's blog by Tony Roche, Emerald's Chief Officer: Publishing & Strategic Relationships, discusses the Plan S initiative, its challenges and unintended impacts. Follow the link to read the full blog and please add any questions or thoughts in the comments below. ▶️ https://bit.ly/3YgBvSd #OAWeek #OpenAccess #Diversity

Did you know that a recent report conducted by Pro Bono Economics found that more than a quarter of five-year-olds in England didn’t meet expected levels of literacy?   From being able to experience the joy of reading, to improved opportunities later in life, literacy in early years is of vital importance. In fact, reading for pleasure among young children is more strongly correlated with academic success than their parental income levels.    We believe every child should have the same life chances and access to education and learning, which is why we've partnered with Chapter One UK, a charity that connects schools with companies who sponsor their employees as online reading volunteers. Every week each volunteer spends 30 minutes reading with the same child throughout the academic year using Chapter One's bespoke platform. This regular, consistent reading with the same adult has proven to help transform each child's reading ability and confidence.    The partnership comes as Emerald's CEO, Vicky Williams, has been made Chair of Business in the Community's Literacy Taskforce. The Taskforce is currently focusing on the Keighley area of Bradford, where Chapter One has a waiting list of schools who would like to take part.    If you're part of an organisation that would also like to get involved, your business can help by supporting one or more teams of 10 employee volunteers with a donation of £3,400 for each team. This helps to cover operational, equipment and training costs. Each organisation nominates a co-ordinator to lead volunteer recruitment and be the main point of contact with the charity. To find out more or to get involved contact sarah.taylor@chapterone.org.   If you're an individual who'd like to support the Literacy Taskforce's work with Chapter One, you can donate to Vicky's JustGiving page. Your money will be well spent supporting vital literacy work in Bradford and Keighley. Donate here: https://bit.ly/4esz0TT   You have the power to make a real and lasting difference to children’s lives in Bradford and Keighley.
