Another tough week for the construction industry.
Main contractor ISG filing for administration across 5 divisions is going to be tough for everyone involved and will cause huge job loses across the UK, estimated to be over 3000.
While my company hasn’t been affected by the news I’m certain a lot of my clients will have been.
But I do have my own thoughts on this
First one being, on one of my clients sites we were supplying labour to. The lads went to work as normal and the site was closed at the end of the shift, not a single mention of the administration pending.
So how can a company of that size not know prior to the afternoon they were going into administration? Surely they would have known the current situation and had several conversations about the possible outcome of the business, these decisions are not made in an afternoon.
Second is, imagine how many companies have been chasing payments for weeks if not months while being palmed off with excuse after excuse and not receiving payments, surely people at the highest level of ISG would have known the situation and I can guarantee not a single sub contractor was given a hint of the pending decisions.
And lastly, I see a lot of companies reaching out offering assistance to the people who have lost their jobs, which is absolutely brilliant, BUT.
Let’s not forget that some of these people who are looking for new roles will be the same people who have stringed along plenty of people and putting people’s livelihoods at risk all over the country.
I know this post will divide opinions across LinkedIn, people who have not listened to anything will see this as an insensitive post, while companies who have could have or are about to lose everything will agree with it.
Let’s hope that all the senior contracts managers, contract managers and QSs who have unfortunately found themselves unemployed at the drop of a hat, now have a different perspective, approach dealings with accounts and pay in the future with a more compassionate appreciation of our livelihoods.
It’s a another terrible week in construction, a terrible loss of employment across the UK and I’m sure the whole industry will feel the affects for a long time.
