We’ve seen this statistic a lot this week but is it worthy of the headlines? It’s certainly received plenty of attention coming in the wake of Amazon’s recent RTO announcement. Many have expressed their puzzlement that leaders of top companies hold such a view, but other commentators have played down the importance of the finding. Nick Bloom comments that there are lots of similar one-off surveys, many not particularly rigorous, and unsurprisingly the media pick up on the most extreme findings which often turn out to be the most wrong. Christine Armstrong makes the nuanced point that respondents are talking about what they think will happen, not specific plans to drive RTO in their own businesses. Phil Kirschner makes a related point that perhaps we should not put too much store in what CEOs think will happen when most employees think otherwise. And in the same report, CEOs’ second most important operational priority to drive growth is EVP to attract and retain talent which presumably will not be helped by mandating a RTO!

We have to be honest, this shocked us a bit. Of course we believe that employee surveys can provide critical, regular data to gauge the mood of staff as well as inform future policy and decision-making. But we also believe this is just one part of a rich ongoing communication process with staff. People are at the heart of any business. Two-way communication is key, we recently presented to the Board of one of our clients the best results we have ever seen from an engagement survey. They are a business that values their staff and rich communication is the foundation of their strategy and it showed in their results. Well done again, you know who you are! https://lnkd.in/eCcYm8Af #StaffEngagement #GiveStaffAVoice #PowerOfCommunication #StaffSurvey

Another powerful piece of data in the quest for greater gender equity. With, maternity, menopause and a greater burden of caring responsibility, no matter how much love is also involved, many women have barriers to earning, influence and a secure retirement that their male peers do not have to navigate. Equity of opportunity in all these areas can only come with increased awareness and positive policies and attitudes. Every business can make a difference by engaging and empowering ALL of the workforce. And the upside? Greater diversity and experience, maintaining talent pools, attracting the next generation of leaders and achievers and saying goodbye to groupthink and homogeneity in senior representation. https://lnkd.in/eydk9hC5 #PensionGap #GenderEquity #DiversityEquityandInclusion

An interesting piece this week from HR Grapevine about internal mobility. Some of the core principles here including good communications with staff, in this case to promote internal opportunities, valuing the skills and potential of your existing workforce and encouraging development and progression are very familiar to us at Employee Feedback. We see the case for internal mobility to retain knowledge and skills, reduce recruitment costs and keep staff engaged and feeling valued. We particularly love the Canva idea of encouraging employees to create skills passports and will definitely be sharing it with our clients, thank you HR Grapevine 😊 https://lnkd.in/ehmfwyVA #SkillsPassport #InternalMobility

A sober read this month in People Management, reporting on The Burn Our Report 2024. Many of the primary causes of poor mental health can be supported and reduced by a positive communication culture, where staff feel heard and therefore valued as part of the business. Demands on managers are growing with multi-generational workforces, flexible working arrangements, encouraging staff to be their authentic selves in the workplace and acknowledging the increasing economic pressures most of us are experiencing. Training to support this critical role in an increasingly complex environment, including how to provide the signposting to mental health support has the potential to make the critical difference to today's stressed-out employees. https://lnkd.in/eZYrhbCc #MentalHealth #Stress #Wellbeing

This survey in HR Grapevine certainly rings true for us. There is a lot of noise about AI, and no one doubts its potential to change the way we work and even the work we do but exactly how this will unfold is not clear and understandably causes worry and even mistrust. Transparency and good communication are what businesses need to commit to as AI is integrated into organisational life. https://lnkd.in/e6RdQDBr #FutureOfWork #AI #TrustAndTransparency

Interesting research by Henley Business School covered by Personnel Today identifying six types of post-pandemic worker. We recognise all of these, though the breakdown of the size of these categories is helpful. These are all types to look for in your workforce and ensure your employee engagement survey speaks to the motivations and priorities of everyone to understand and respond to their needs and concerns. https://lnkd.in/ern4NMcj #worklifebalance #employeeengagement #futureofwork
